More than 1,000 Carbon County residents were removed from the official voter registration list when the county's election board certified the voting totals during a recent meeting.

Officially, there are 37,362 registered voters in the county, which is 1,059 less than there were for the General Election of 2010. The decrease in registrations is primarly due to the county's policy of purging voters who have been inactive in the election process.Prior to the certification of registration totals, persons who failed to vote in the past five years were purged from the system. Others were removed from the list due to death and/or relocating from the county.The election board is comprised of Charles E. Wildoner, Jim Thorpe; Gabriel Fritz, Lansford; and Lee Becker, East Penn Township. They have been appointed by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic of the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas to take the places of commissioners William J. O'Gurek, Charles Getz and Wayne E. Nothstein, all whom are candidates in the May 17 Primary Election.For Primary Election purposes, there are 33,006 persons eligible to participate in the process from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, since only voters registered to the two major parties - Democratic and Republican - are able to vote. That total includes 18,819 Democrats and 13, 835 Republicans, giving the Democrats a 4,984-voter plurality.The new voter registration totals show there are 567 less Democrats and 352 less Republicans due to the purging process.
