A Lower Towamensing Township supervisor will be compensated to attend a convention only if it falls on a scheduled day to work.

That was the ruling made by the township's Board of Auditors as part of a joint special meeting Monday with the township board of supervisors.The township will pay $75 per day for wages if it was an elected supervisor's day to work during the time in which the supervisor attends a state convention on a Sunday through Wednesday.At its reorganizational meeting last week, the auditors approved an expense allowance for Supervisors Jesse Mendez of $50 per day and all expenses to attend a state convention in Hershey.But, instead of paying the full salary, Mendez was granted $75 per day for a maximum of four days, as agreed to at that time by the auditors.However, the new motion states that in order for Mendez to receive the $75 per day for a maximum of four days, the convention must fall on a day he's scheduled to work.Mendez told the auditors he works on a part-time basis for the Carbon County Solid Waste Department."There's a possibility I could be called out," Mendez said. "I never know; I'm part-time."Auditor Carl Silverstein rationed that while $75 a day isn't necessarily a lot of money, he said the auditors felt the move was in the best interests of the township."Our position was you become supervisors because you wanted to give back to the township," Silverstein said. "We don't want to create a hardship."Also at last week's reorganizational meeting, the auditors set the wages and benefits at $14.82 per hour, with no benefits, for any elected supervisors when any or all three should be called out to work on the township roads on a strict, call-out basis to be determined by the road foreman.That came after the township's board of supervisors, at its Jan. 3 reorganizational meeting, recommended to the auditors the supervisors pay and benefits for those supervisors hired as township employees.Also at its Jan. 3 meeting, supervisors approved a motion to employ elected supervisors as casual employees to perform work on the roads when necessary and/or needed on a call-out basis at the discretion of the township road foreman.In other business Monday, supervisors granted Brian Stroup a 90-day extension for his subdivision plan.
