Ex-librarian will lead Halloween parade
Mazie Ziegler, 98, who was a librarian in Lehighton High School for 34 years, will be the grand marshall of the 2011 Lehighton Area Halloween Parade.
The parade will be held at 5 p.m. on Oct. 22, with the rain date being 2 p.m. on Oct. 23.
The announcement of the grand marshall was made by Julie Harris, parade committee chairman.
Harris said the line of march will consist of six divisions with several bands, groups, individual marchers, antique cars, and emergency vehicles.
This is the 41st year for the parade. It will form on Coal Street, utilize the same route as last year, and disband at the Community Grove.
Ziegler graduated from Lehighton High School in 1930 and from then Kutztown College in 1934. She worked for 4 1/2 years as a teacher in the former Parryville School before eventually becoming a librarian.
Ziegler is well known for her travels, having visited every continent but Antarctica.
She retired as a librarian in 1975 but continued traveling for years after that.
She also was employed part-time after retiring as a tax consultant for H & R Block.
Asked why she chose a career as a librarian, she said she loves to read.
Reading is still a part of her daily schedule. Friends and relatives bring her books on many different topics. Wit her varied interests and subject matter, she said she doesn't have a favorite author.
"I read anything that's given to me," she remarked.
Harris said entry forms for parade participation can be picked up at Larry Markley Insurance, Zimmerman's Dairy, Lehighton Borough Office, Jim Thorpe National Bank-Lehighton Branch, Carbon County Music and More, Dance with Kim, and Normal Square Mini Mart.
The entry deadline is Oct. 15.
She added that the parade is run entirely on donations. Donations can be sent to Lehighton Area Halloween Parade, P. O. Box 241, Lehighton, PA.
