Lehighton baseball, NL softball win

Lehighton opened up its baseball season with a win, while Northern Lehigh rolled in its softball opener in local sports action on Monday.




The Indians used an eight-run third inning to pull away from the Roughies for a 12-6 non-league victory to open the season.

Anthony Farole had three hits, including a triple and three RBI for Lehighton. Jacen Nalesnik hit a solo home run in the seventh, A.J. Wenrich went two-for-four with a double and RBI and Tyler Hill had two RBI.

Hill was also the winning pitcher, striking out eight in five innings.

Zach Edwards went three-for-three for Catasauqua.

The Zephyrs broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 11-6 non-league win over the Bears.

Whitehall was led by Unbenauer, who had two hits and five RBI. Joey Weismeth had a solo home run for the Bears (0-1) and Drew Borger scored three runs.

Wloczewski was the winning pitcher,while Xavier Hammond suffered the loss.

No. Lehigh-ES North

Maggie Lear tossed a one-hitter and Kristi Seiler led a potent offensive attack as Northern Lehigh routed East Stroudsburg North, 19-1, in a non-league game.

Lear struck out six and walked two, allowing just a first-inning single.

Meanwhile, Seiler had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Also having big games for the Bulldogs (1-0) were Payton Marunich (two hits, two runs, three RBI); Erika Bowman (two hits, two RBI, three runs); and Megan Filchner (two hits, three RBI).

Because of field conditions at East Stroudsburg North, the game was played at Northern Lehigh but the Timberwolves (0-1) were the home team.

Palisades defeated Lehighton, 8-1, in a non-league game.

Kaitlin Green had an RBI single to account for the only Indian ((0-1) run.

Krista Morrone was the winning pitcher for Palisades, striking out 14.

Melanie Morekin had a home run and four RBI to help the Zephyrs score a 9-8 win over the Lady Bears in 10 innings.

Madison Kelly had three singles, drove in a run and stole four bases for Whitehall (1-0). Rachel Sisco went three-for-six with a triple and four RBI and Hayli Marini also had two singles and one RBI for the Bears (0-1).

Morekin was the winning pitcher, while Marini suffered the loss, despite nine strikeouts.

Salisbury-No. Lehigh

The Lady Bulldogs opened up Colonial League action with a 4-0 loss to the Falcons.

Emily Kotch had a goal and two assists, Marissa Strunk had a goal and one assist, Katelyn Bucchin had one goal and Amy Klein had a goal for the Falcons.

Salisbury outshot Northern Lehigh 18-7.

Salisbury goalie Loren Fischer had seven save, while Kelly Owens had 14 saves for Northern Lehigh (0-1).

Pleasant Vy.-Parkland

Kiera Kaunas had a hat trick to spark the Lady Trojans to a 6-1 win over the Bears in a non-league contest.

Knauss and teammates Kate Granahan, Camille Roberts and Jill O'Connell all added goals in the second half after neither team scored before intermission.

Hannah Bernier scored the lone goal for Pleasant Valley.

The Trojans outshot the Bears 8-5 with Sarah Elmonticir making two saves for PV and Julia Hulbert having theee saves and Jill hartman one for Parkland.



The Spartans managed to sweep the Blue Bombers by a 5-0 score in Colonial League play.

Will Worthington and Michael Gulston (ND) def. Lydia Anthony and Tyler Snyder 6-0, 6-0; Michael Biffen and Colin O'Leary (ND) def. Nathan Fronheiser and Trevin Green 6-1, 6-1.

The Bulldog JV's opened up the season with a 16-6 win over the Timberwolves in six innings.

Jennie Fronheiser went two-for-five and had three RBI, while Chelsea Harlan had two hits and one RBI for Northern Lehigh.

Sophia Hankee was the starting pitcher and fanned five in four innings to get the win.
