Tigers beat by PA

It wasn't Pen Argyl's first shots that hurt Northwestern.

It was the second and third chances the Green Knights got off of their own misses that led them to a 63-58 win over Northwestern on opening night of the 2010-11 Colonial League basketball season."The difference in the game was their ability to offensive rebound," said Northwestern head coach BJ Dugan."We got beat up on the inside. We can't let that happen. We have to be more physical. We have to box out more effectively."Pen Argyl out-rebounded Northwestern 41-28 in the game and much of that edge came under the Knights' basket. Ryan DeJesso, a 6-3 forward who missed the first two games of the season with an ankle injury, joined a starting line up that already included 6-3 Alec Heard, 6-3 Kyle Muller and 6-5 Tyler Cartal.DeJerro had 12 rebounds, while Muller had six to go with his game-high 23 points."We do have some size," said Pen Argyl head coach Mike Frew."Rebounding has been strong for us this season so far. We have a nice combination of guards and centers who feed off of each other in terms of their skills and abilities to play the game. We like to work inside out."The Knights did that in the first half against Northwestern's zone defense. They had four different players hit three-point shots in the first two periods as they attempted 17 before halftime."I think it makes us really dangerous," said Muller. "It's hard to get size and shooting ability, especially at the high school level."After a back and forth first quarter, Pen Argyl took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it up. The Tigers battled back to tie the game early in the third, but couldn't overtake the Knights. The Knights had a six-point lead twice in the second quarter and went to halftime up 29-25.Northwestern guard Dylan Roth kept the Tigers in the game in the third quarter. He hit three of his five second-half three-pointers in the third. His second three tied the game at 31-31 with 4:43 left in the third. But the Knights went on an 11-2 run.Two Matt Maher baskets kept the Tigers within 44-40 after three quarter.Pen Argyl built a 14-point lead midway through the fourth before the Tigers made their final run.A Roth three-pointer and a pair of baskets by Andrew Rivera cut the lead to 61-55 with 33 seconds left.PA's Eddie Monastero made two late free throws for an 8-point lead with 19 seconds left to seal the win.PEN ARGYLWentzell 0-0-0-0, Pipher 1-0-0-3, Monastero 4-2-2-13, DeJesso 2-3-4-7, Muller 9-3-5-23, Bender 1-0-0-3, Cartal 4-2-2-10, Heard 2-0-1-4.
