Home contractor arrested for fraud

A Carbon County home construction contractor has been arrested for home improvement fraud.

State police at Lehighton said Glenn Reimer, 44, of 105 Ridgeview Drive, Lehighton, owner of Kan-Do Homes, was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 9, and arraigned on the charge before District Judge Bruce Appleton of Palmerton.Bail was set at $30,000 straight cash and it was posted by Reimer's wife, and he was released, troopers said. A preliminary hearing on the charge is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. before Appleton.According to troopers on Oct. 1, 2009, Lee Michaels, of Log Fence Rd., in Towamensing Township, signed a contract with Reimer and his company to have a prefabricated home built and subsequently placed on the victim's property located a 375 Long Fence Rd.Reimer told Michaels that the home would be completed in about eight weeks. In the next few months Michaels paid Reimer a total of $88,622.14.Reimer told Michaels that the money was being used as a deposit with Muncy Homes, of Muncy, for the construction of the home and other money from the deposit was used to pay contractors the defendant had hired for site excavation, foundation construction and septic system installation. The defendant then sent a letter to Michaels on Jan. 12, advising him the first deposit of $26,877.60 was delivered to Muncy Homes. The letter also stated Muncy Homes required another deposit of $37,116.94 and that the payment was due within 24 hours and the check needed to be made out to Kan-Do Homes.Troopers allege that Reimer never signed a contract with or made any payments to Muncy Homes. Also, Reimer did not pay any home builder to construct a home for Michaels. Reimer never paid or scheduled any contractors to construct or deliver any materials or labor for the septic system, sand mound or the concrete for the basement. One year later Michaels made arrangements for his own home to be constructed. After several pleas from Michaels to Reimer to return the money, the defendant failed to do so, troopers said.Troopers ask any other customer of Kan-Do Homes who may feel they have been defrauded to contact them at (610) 377-4270. Trooper Patrick J. Finn is the investigating officer.
