Carbon to honor veterans with Palmerton parade

Honor all Who Served both Past and Present.

That's the theme of this year's Carbon County Veterans Day Parade, which will be held Sunday in Palmerton. The rain date is Nov. 14.Hosted by the Palmerton United Veterans Organization, which is comprised of the Palmerton American Legion Post 269 and Palmerton VFW Post 7134, the parade will start at 2 p.m. with the singing of the national anthem by Nicole Rose Donatone.Ed Moyer, commander of American Legion Post 269, said organizers hope the six-division parade will enable county residents to "remember all our veterans and soldiers of today.""The parade should remind them of all the sacrifices they and their families make to preserve the freedoms we so often take for granted," Moyer said. "This year, the Palmerton UVO is attempting to bring all the communities of Carbon County a little closer together by having something from every community in the parade."This year, Moyer said there are 21 Veterans Organization from Carbon County: eight American Legions, six VFW, two AMVETS, two Marine Corps Leagues, one Navy, one Vietnam Veterans Organization, and one Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Group.Moyer said the Palmerton UVO asked each organization to select a Grand Marshal to represent their group, which is why there are several Grand Marshals in each division. The parade will start at Seventh Street and Delaware Avenue, where it will make a right onto Third Street. From there, it will turn left onto Franklin Avenue, and continue onto Mauch Chunk Road to Walnut Street in the area of the car wash, where it will disband. Before the parade, the 600 and 700 blocks of Franklin and Lafayette avenues will be closed from 11 a.m. until the parade ends; the 700 block of Columbia Avenue and Seventh Street will be closed from 11 a.m. until the parade ends; and the parade route will be closed from 1 p.m. until the parade ends. The parade will be telecast live on Blue Ridge Communications TV 13 with the reviewing stand in front of Borough Hall along Delaware Avenue. Free American flags will be distributed to children (one per child) across the street from the reviewing stand while supplies last. The parade line up is as follows:Division 1(Delaware Ave. and 7th)Palmerton Police Chief Randy Smith with Mayor Brad DollPalmerton UVO Color FrontGrand Marshals Post 269-Post 7134Palmerton UVO and StatueState Representative/ Speaker of the House Keith McCallCarbon County Commissioners William O'Gurek and Charles GetzCarbon County Veterans Affair Director Henry M.
