The goal of replacing a 400-ft. section of the Pleasant Row wall picked up steam on Friday as workers from Tamaqua Borough and Radocha Excavating, Coaldale, tore out a major section of the old wall and built a new one using concrete blocks. Many believe the wall to be at least 160 years old. The retaining wall was constructed by the Little Schuylkill Coal & Navigation Railroad prior to Tamaqua's Great Flood of 1850. The Little Schuylkill River once flowed through town near the railroad tracks but was moved farther east prior to that time. The wall is the property of the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad.
