A Lehighton woman was given a jail term for driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance on Thursday during Carbon County court proceedings. She was one of seven defendants in pending DUI-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Senior Judge Richard W. Webb.

Towamensing incidentChristine A. Maniaci, 46, was arrested on Dec. 8, 2009, by state police at Lehighton who responded to the Country Junction along Interchange Road for a report of a person slumped over the wheel of a vehicle.Troopers found Maniaci in her vehicle with the engine running passed out. Also found in the vehicle was merchandise valued at $158.85 that was from the Country Junction store that was taken and not paid for. She entered a plea of receiving stolen property for that part of the incident.Maniaci is currently in the Schuylkill County prison for a probation violation and was resentenced on Sept. 1 in that county to serve 90 days in prison on a DUI charge.Webb sentenced her to serve 90 days to five years in jail, a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and ordered she get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment. On the receiving charge she was placed on probation for a year concurrent with the DUI count.Webb gave her a break and let the Carbon sentence run concurrent with the Schuylkill sentence. The Carbon sentence began yesterday so when she is done in Schuylkill she will be transferred to the Carbon prison to finish her sentence.Other pleasOther defendants who entered guilty pleas to DUI charges included:Jeffery Michael Singley, 41, of Slatington, was arrested on April 8 along SR248 in Lower Towamensing Township by state police. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.Webb placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, get a D&A evaluation and render three hours of community service per month while on probation.Samuel B. Steigerwalt, 21, of Walnutport, was arrested on May 24, 2009, along Mauch Chunk St., in Mahoning Township. Given a test, the result was .04BAC. He was 20 at the time of the incident meaning the state legal limit is .02 for anyone under 21. He was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) program for first time offenders but was revoked for failure to follow the conditions.Webb placed him on probation for a six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300 and get a D&A evaluation.Jacob Yenca, 20, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on Nov. 26, 2009, along Maury Road in Franklin Township by state police. Given a test the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Webb sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one year license suspended and get a D&A evaluation. He will begin the jail term on Friday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m.Thomas Michael McMahon, 40, of Parryville, was arrested on March 28 along SR209 in Franklin Township by state police. Given a test, the result was .20BAC.Webb sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension and get a D&A evaluation. He will begin the jail term at 6 a.m. on Nov. 12, and serve it on consecutive weekends.Matthew Douglas Tracey, 37, of Palmerton, was arrested on Nov. 25, 2009, by state police along SR209 in Towamensing Township. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Webb sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension and get a D&A evaluation. He will begin the jail term on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. and serve it on consecutive weekends.Justin William Kuneck, 33, of Palmerton, was arrested on May 19 along Maple Drive in Lower Towamensing Township, by state police. Given a test, the result was .13BAC.Webb sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension and get a D&A evaluation. He will begin the jail term on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.Each defendant must also pay court costs and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
