Now & Then Antiques evokes a trip down memory lane

American Pickers would indeed have a field day with this place.

Complete with a 5,000-square-foot showroom filled with treasures and memories, Now & Then Antiques and Collectibles in Palmerton certainly evokes a trip down memory lane.Located at 636 Delaware Avenue in Palmerton, the business held a week-long grand opening recently.Terry Eckhart, who along with his wife, Judy, co-owns the operation, said the business buys, sells and trades. An extension of Terry's Winners Circle, the showroom consists of antiques, antique toys, gas pumps, sports memorabilia, autographs, lunch boxes, Coke and Pepsi coolers, advertising signs, vintage bikes, neon signs and more.Judy Eckhart said the operation opened amid much fanfare."Everything has a little story behind it," Judy said. "A lot of people have been in, and everyone tells a story."Judy said what sets the business apart from its contemporaries is its uniqueness."It doesn't remind me of any other store," she said. "It's not your regular retail store."Judy said the concept behind the showroom was essentially nostalgia."It started with novely items, and Terry just went crazy," Judy Eckhart said. "This is what he really liked."As evidenced by his track record, Judy said Terry continues to evolve. She said Terry's Music Explosion opened in the mid-1970s, and started out with 45s, 8-track tapes and posters. The business slowly evolved into televisions, vcrs, and rental movies, as Judy said Terry became the first person in the area to do the latter.Terry then bought another video store called Vacation Video, at which time he moved Terry's Music Explosion and combined the two around the late-1980s early-1990s, Judy said. They then downsized, and sold Terry's Music Explosion to one of Terry's good friends, before he opened up Terry's Winners Circle in the mid-1990s, she said.About a decade ago, the couple began to decorate the office with automobiles and memorabilia in what would be a foreshadowning of things to come."Everything he loves to do, he gets it started and really gets into it," Judy said. "He's a hometown boy who likes to bring that to Palmerton."Now & Then Collectibles is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.
