Two young boys from the New Columbus section of Nesquehoning were rescued from the bottom of a 60-foot pit where they were found trapped up to their necks in waste coal silt, that has quicksand qualities. Nesquehoning Mayor Michael Kravelk said Anthony Focht and Eugene Dacey, both believed to be 10 years old, were searching for fossils on coal lands when they walked into the pit at about 5:30 p.m. and began to sink in the silt. They yelled for help for hours but weren't heard. They were found during a search when they didn't return home after dark.
