On Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, a hearing was held by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to determine public opinion on a proposed gambling casino on half-mile from the boundary of the Gettysburg National Military Park and Battlefield. One of the presentations during that hearing was a video shown by a volunteer group, No-Casino Gettysburg, entitled "Our Gettysburg Legacy."It featured actor Sam Waterston, who has portrayed President Abraham Lincoln on stage and screen, actor Matthew Broderick, who portrayed Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in the motion picture "Glory," the story of the 43rd Massachusetts, the first all Black regiment to fight in the Civil War, actor Stephen Lang, who portrayed Confederate General George Pickett in the motion picture "Gettysburg," author David McCullough (1776 - Truman - John Adams), Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who made his home in Gettysburg, Paul W. Bucha, Congressional Medal-of-Honor recipient, and film-maker Ken Burns (The Civil War - Baseball - Jazz - The National Parks); with music by nationally known composer and conductor John Williams. The video was produced and directed by Jeff Griffith.A statement made after the showing of the video attested to the fact that everything connected with this project was donated, including everyone who appeared on-screen; the musical scoring; all those who worked behind the scenes; all of the equipment necessary to make the video; and the time and effort of every person listed in the credits.Not one cent was paid to produce this most beautiful and touching commentary about what Gettysburg means to America and her citizens and why it should be protected forever.
