'Walking miracle'

Zach Miller, the Marian football player who suffered a serious injury Friday night during the Colts' game with Mahanoy Area, is resting at home today, in what his parents term a "walking miracle."

The critical head injury suffered by the 5-10, 181-pound senior has been reduced to a "severe concussion."Miller and a Mahanoy Area player collided near midfield of the Men of Marian Stadium, Hometown, on a kickoff that followed a Golden Bear touchdown with about six minutes left before the intermission, leaving players and fans fearing for the boy's life. The crowd watched in stunned silence as Miller lay motionless on the field until emergency personnel removed him by ambulance. He was transported to a nearby baseball field where he was taken by a Life Flight medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township.Prior to the start of the second half, Sr. Bernard Agnes, the school's principal, took the microphone at the stadium's press box and led fans from both sides in a prayer for Miller's health.Hours after he remained unconscious, Miller awakened and, although "groggy" at the time, recognized his parents. Miraculously, he was discharged from the hospital yesterday.Barbara Miller, the boy's mother, confirmed this morning that Zach is "doing amazingly well," terming his recovery is a "walking miracle.""I want to get on my hands and knees to thank God," she said.Silence enveloped the Men of Marian Stadium as rescue personnel treated Miller."He was literally unconscious," said Barbara, who with her husband, Jay, and family members rushed to midfield."We still don't know what happened," she said, "We assume it was a head-on collision and Zach took the brunt of it. He was literally unconscious, completely out, some people have told us he was out for 40 minutes, but it was more like two hours."The Miller family drove to Salisbury Township while Zach was lifeflighted and treated in the trauma unit. The Millers "did not get great news" for what seemed like hours. Visibly shaken, Coach Stan Dakosty rushed to the hospital after the game ended, joining Zach's family.Barbara said a steady stream of classmates and teammates flowed to Zach's room throughout the day and night."I don't think it (the flow of visitors) stopped till nighttime," she said.Doctors eventually gave the Millers some positive news on the brain and spine tests that were taken."We got to see Zach between tests, and he knew me and his father, although he was groggy," Barbara said.As the long night progressed, Zach's condition improved, which Barabara credited on "everyone's prayers,""It was amazing. We eventually got better news and Zach is doing unbelievably better. He was initially in the Critical Care ward, but then they moved him to a regular room," she reported.Word of Miller's recovery spread swiftly throughout the Carbon-Schuylkill area, bringing relief to many who either saw or had heard about the severity of his injury.Yesterday, Zach was back in his home in Jim Thorpe, thanks, his mother said, to the answered prayers of many of his teammates, friends and family members.
