Tigers hold off Saucon Valley

Northwestern has had many winning seasons over the years.

But for the first time in their history, the Tigers are officially a winning program. With a 34-19 victory over Saucon Valley Friday night, the school upped its all-time record to 230-229-6. It marks the first time ever that Northwestern is over the .500 mark."When I saw that fact, that brought it all back," said Tiger head coach Tom Linnette. "We had a good season last year but we seemed to chase that mark all last year."That is a neat fact. When you think of how we struggled in the past, it's nice to be on this side of .500. The kids need to realize that our program is a good one. We want to use our history and take advantage of the present."Northwestern (2-0) took advantage of numerous big plays to build a lead against the Panthers.A 71-yard run by Bob Clymer set up the first Tiger score, while Ty Cunningham broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run early in the second half. The home team's margin grew to 27-6 midway through the third quarter when Ben Snyder's pass went off one receiver's hands right to Josh Werley for a 41-yard hook-up.That advantage, however, wasn't safe against the arm of Andrew Remaly.Saucon's signal-caller drove his team for a score, tossing a 23-yard scoring strike to Chris Voag late in the third frame. After a Northwestern turnover moments later, Remaly hit Voag again for a 27-yarder to whittle the lead to 27-19."We just didn't sieze the opportunities to put the game away," said Linnette. "You can't sit back on your heels and say, now we can coast. But still, an ugly win is better than a pretty loss."There's a lot of lessons we have to learn here. You can't lose your focus against a team with talent and they're a team with talent. That quarterback is the real deal."While Remaly finished with 245 yards passing, his counterpart also turned in a solid effort. After the visitors narrowed the gap, Snyder opened the fourth quarter with a shuffle pass to Cunningham. The play went for a 47-yard TD that provided a 15-point bulge."The coaches probably saw something there," said Cunningham, who rushed for 92 yards on the night. "Once I caught the ball and turned around I saw the lanes and read the blocks and did my part."It's very important to keep scoring. If our defense doesn't hold them we have to score the points to win the game. I don't think too many people thought we'd be 2-0 and we're proving them wrong."Snyder finished the evening with two rushing touchdowns in addition to his two TD tosses. The running game also produced 262 yards."The young backs are talented," said Linnette. "They may not be the fastest but they are some of the best open-field runners we've ever had. The fullbacks are fast and quick, but you can't make a living on the big play. You have to grind it out."We still have to work things out. Our defense has issues [giving up 299 yards] and our special teams have issues [allowing a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown]. At times they were fantastic and other times not so much. It's a long season, though."
