Juries returned verdicts in Schuylkill County Courts finding a Tamaqua woman guilty in a drug deal and a state correction officer guilty of assaulting another officer.

After seven hours of deliberation a jury reached a verdict Tuesday evening around 9 p.m. finding Nicole D. Ferryan, 42, of 121 Owl Creek Road, Tamaqua, guilty of a charge of criminal conspiracy by engaging in delivery of a controlled substance but not guilty of two other conspiracy charges, to possession a controlled substance and deliver a controlled substance. Judge Charles M. Miller set Wednesday, Oct. 27, as date of sentencing.A confidential informant (CI) for the Tamaqua Police Drug Task Force testified on April 9 near a iron stairway on Mahanoy Street he made a buy of a package of marijuana from a man and that Ferryan was the driver of the vehicle.Ferryan testified she was not aware of a drug buy stating her counsin asked her to drive to the location to deliver a pack a cigarettes he purchased for a friend.Sgt. Richard Weaver, head of the borough' s drug task force, testified how ICs are recruited to help police against the drug war. Patrolman Anthony Stanell testified on preparing the CI for the buy and of conducting a surveillance to watch the transaction take place.Guard guiltyJohn Stephen Sanders, of Potttsville, was found guilty by a jury of a charge of simple assault on another officer and Judge D. Michael Stine found him guilty of a summaryy charge of harassment. Sentence was deferred to a later date as the court ordered a pre-sentence investigative report to be prepared.Charges against Sanders were brought byt Criminal Investigator Harold Kertes, of the Pennsylvania Department of State Corrections. The victim, Correction Officer Daniel Miller, claimed he was struck several times in the groin and at first thought it was part of the training being given by a supervisor but that it was part of a scheme to get him out. Sanders denied the charges.
