'Genuine faith, genuine love, genuine people'

Members of Marian Catholic High School class of 2010 welcomed back a familiar face during their baccalaureate celebration on Friday evening.

Father George Winne, who had previously served the school for six and a half years as Director of Spiritual Activities, before leaving that position in December, returned to give the homily to the graduating seniors.Winne started by relating an old English parable, about a miller who was the happiest man in all of England. Word of the man's continual happy state spread throughout the country and drew the attention of the king."What makes you so happy, when I, as king, am so sad, the king asked," said Winne. "The miller said, 'I earn my own bread, I love my wife, my children, and my friends, and they love me, and I owe not a penny to anyone.'"Using the parable, Winne stressed the importance of finding one's place in the world and of being a "genuine person.""Genuine faith, genuine love, genuine people. These are more precious than anything," he said.Winne reminded the students to keep Jesus Christ in their life, as He has been the foundation of their years at Marian. Recalling this year's drama club production of Jesus Christ, Superstar, Winne stated how difficult it was for people to know how to love Jesus."Why was it so hard?" he asked. "He had to be the least complicated person in all of history. People were so confused, they didn't know how to respond to him."Incredible things happen. Our fears and worries are made less when we rely on the strength of the Lord, our family, and our community."Winne urged students to find their own communities and to become active parts of them.Telling the story of Mr. Green, a man who purchased a run down home in one of the worst areas of Los Angeles, Winne explained how one man's simple use of trees and plants to beautify his home inspired his neighbors to fix up their homes and soon, the entire community became more beautiful."You too have incredible powers to do incredible things," he told the seniors. "You, too, will indeed be superstars."Daniel Lisella read from the Book of Isaiah 63:7-9 and Alex Garber read from 1 Peter 1:3-9.Katie Owens served as the cantor.Michael Stauffer, Justin Huegel, and Sarah Connely were the altar servers.Andrew Sherkness, Damian Gallagher, Emily Schilling, and Kristen Halenar were the flag bearers.Kayla Stanek and Chelsea Koerbler were the gift bearers.Music was provided by the Rock Music Ministry. At the end of the service, Father Winne led the senior class in a medley of tunes from Jesus Jam, which he accompanied with his guitar. The celebrant was Father Philip Rogers, a Marian alumnus, and uncle to senior class member Regina Morrison.Marian's graduation ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. today at the high school.
