Schuylkill driver facing charges

A Schuylkill County driver is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUI) and fleeing and eluding, following an incident that occurred on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

State police at Frackville said troopers were on patrol about 8:40 p.m. when they observed a 1998 Ford Escort being driven in an erratic manner and attempting to make a traffic stop near Lehigh Ave., in Frackville. The driver, later identified as Sydney Pope. 47, of Frackville, attempted to elude police but was eventually stopped at the intersection of Frack St. and Railroad Ave., in Fracvkille.While at that location Leonard Veach Jr., 53, of Shenandoah, arrived and advised troopers that Pope's vehicle had sideswiped his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu while he was traveling southbound on SR924 in the area of the Gilberton exit. Pope failed to stop and continued south to Frackville. Troopers said consistent damage was observed on the right side of Pope's car and the left side of Veach's vehicle.Troopers said the car Pope was driving was registered to Meda Marshall, 48, of Frackville. She was contacted and told troopers Pope was not authorized to be driving the vehicle.Pope was taken into custody and arraigned before District Judge Bernadette Nahas, of Frackville, on charges of DUI, hit and run, fleeing and eluding police, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and multiple summary motor vehicle code violations. Pope was unable to post the $20,000 bail set and was committed to the county prison in Pottsville.
