Hedes, McCall, Heckman are 'all right'

All you have to do is look to the right of the Grid Picks above this column to see how the first week went for yours truly.

A 9-6 record wasn't the start that I actually wanted and I'll make no excuses. One of the answers just may be when I saw that the other two full-time members of the staff, Emmett McCall and Rod Heckman are right next to me with five wrong. We were all pretty busy last week putting the finishing touches on the 2010 TIMES NEWS Football Tab and didn't have a chance to look things over. Also, with TN staffer Andy Steinmetz going 14-1, you know there had to be some upsets. So I'll get right into Week No. 2 and hopefully it'll be the start of working our way back towards the left side of the list:LEHIGHTON AT TAMAQUA - Both the Raiders and Indians cost me last week. The Indians fell to Marian and the Raiders didn't have enough to get past Jim Thorpe. This week, I'll just go with the home team ... Tamaqua, 21-14.SCHUYLKILL HAVEN AT MARIAN - The Colts surprised us last week and needless to say, a close eye is watching whether I go with Marian or its opponent. I guess you could consider this sort of Hurricane season so I'll go with ... Schuylkill Haven, 28-14.SCHUYLKILL VALLEY AT PANTHER VALLEY - Panthers didn't put any points on the board last week and cost me against Mahanoy Area. Schuylkill Valley put up some points and actually beat a good PV team last year ... Schuylkill Valley, 35-7.JIM THORPE AT READING CENTRAL CATHOLIC - This game was supposed to be played in Jim Thorpe but moved to Reading. The Olympians showed last week against Tamaqua that it has a strong defense again. That's why I like ... Jim Thorpe, 28-14.PLEASANT VALLEY AT HONESDALE - Bears might have gotten drilled by Nazareth in their opener, but they do own Honesdale's number ... Pleasant Valley, 21-7.SAUCON VALLEY AT NORTHWESTERN - Tigers held Salisbury scoreless last week. The Panthers had a rough opener against Bangor and should score some points, but I'll take ... Northwestern, 20-13.PALMERTON AT SOUTHERN LEHIGH - Blue Bombers left Wilson score on four big plays last week. Spartans had a good defense in win over Catasauqua. These two teams usually alternate who wins every year.Last year, Solehi finished on top. So that means, this year ... Palmerton, 12-7.NORTHERN LEHIGH AT WILSON - A big Colonial League matchup in Week 2 on a Saturday afternoon. What more could the "Football Gods" ask for. Bulldogs rolled against Notre Dame of Green Pond, while Wilson pulled away from Palmerton in fourth quarter. It's been seven years since Nolehi won at Wilson, but the skid stops now ... Northern Lehigh, 21-14.PALISADES AT BANGOR - Slaters will be in the Colonial League hunt. Pirates won't ... Bangor, 35-7.SALISBURY AT PEN ARGYL - The Green Knights will be lickin' their chops in this one ... Pen Argyl, 42-0.STROUDSBURG AT POTTSVILLE - Crimson Tide have a little too much for the Mountaineers ... Pottsville, 28-6.TRI-VALLEY AT WILLIAMS VALLEY - A bitter rivalry here so I'll just have to flip the coin here ... Tri-Valley, 7-6.EMMAUS AT WHITEHALL - A good early season LVC battle here. I think I'll go with the Zephyrs ... Whitehall, 26-14.NORTHAMPTON AT LIBERTY - Hurricanes have a new coach, but showed last week they'll be a team to watch ... Liberty, 21-13.FREEDOM AT ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC - The Vikings are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in the state. Enough said ... Central Catholic, 28-14.
