Fillies clinch division title
The Marian girls volleyball team defeated rival Nativity to gain the Schuylkill League Division 4 title.
In other volleyball action, Pleasant Valley completed MVC play undefeated with a win over Stroudsburg.
Marian clinched the Schuylkill League Division 4 championship by downing rival Nativity in five games 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6.
The Fillies (14-0; 13-0 league) will now advance to the league championships, which begin Wednesday at Martz Hall. Marian will face host Pottsville while the other semifinal will pit Pine Grove versus Tri-Valley.
Against Nativity, the Fillies were tied 6-6 in the deciding fifth game before reeling off nine straight points to capture the match.
Tori Vadyak had 12 kills, four blocks and three digs for the winners.
Marian also received a strong effort from MaryKate Sherkness, who finished with 17 kills and 25 digs. Taylor Mele added 10 kills, 27 digs and three aces while Kathleen Reilly contributed seven kills.
Other strong performances came from Rachel Krajcirik (two kills, 50 assists, 16 digs, 16 service points, seven aces), Laura Cinicola (four kills, two assists), Cathleen Cataldo (20 disg, 15 service points) and Katelyn Collevechio (14 digs).
The Fillies also captured the JV match, earning a 30-28, 20-25, 25-23 victory.
Weatherly needed an extra game to post a 25-14, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22 Schuylkill League win over Shenandoah Valley.
The Wreckers' Sarah Dolinsky finished with 11 kills, 14 digs, three assists and three aces. Rachel Heister followed with eight digs, 25 assists and two aces.
Also playing well for Weatherly (14-5; 7-5) were, Brittany Hinkle (16 kills, 11 digs and four blocks); Alyssa Kephart (eight kills, 10 digs, three blocks, two aces and two assists); Alicia Panzarella (13 digs, two assists); and Samantha Strizak (two kills, 12 digs, three assists).
In the JV game, Schenandoah Valley escaped with a 25-14, 19-25, 25-13 win.
Pleasant Valley put the finishing touches on a undefeated 12-0 regular season mark in the Mountain Valley Conference with a 25-7, 25-16, 25-14 win over Stroudsburg.
Brittni Cumberland paced the Bears' offense with 19 assists and three kills while Kayla Dorney added eight kills and four digs.
Crystal Cambria (seven kills, four aces), Breanna Joseph (six kills, two blocks), MacKenzie Dorney (13 digs) and Paige Band (two kills) contributed to the victory.
Pleasant Valley will host the Mountain Valley Conference semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 26 as the top seed.
North Schuylkill posted a 15-25, 25-12, 28-26, 23-25, 17-15 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Tamaqua.
Paige Baddick led the Blue Raiders' attack with 21 assists, seven service points and two kills. Stacey Wallace chipped in with 12 service points, 12 kills and two blocks; Sarah Paluck added 11 service points, nine kills and two aces; and Eushina Leibenguth recorded seven service points and two aces.
North Schuylkill won the JV match, 2-0.
Goalie Brett Snyder stopped 19 shots as Palmerton blanked Lehighton, 2-0, in a non-league game.
Dylan Furry provided the offense for the Bombers, scoring off an assist from Garrett Scott in the first half and on a penalty kick in the second half.
Lehighton finished with a 25-19 advantage in shots. Indian goalie Geoff Ebbert made eight saves.
U. Dauphin-Jim Thorpe
Upper Dauphin beat Jim Thorpe, 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14 in Schuylkill League action.
Amanda Petrin had 18 digs for the Olympians. Brittany Holland also played well, adding 11 kills.
Upper Dauphin also won the the JV match, 25-13, 25-16.
