There's a new fire company, borough building, spanking clean and waiting to be rented out for special events, reunions or parties.

There's also a new town hall, police station, where borough business can be conducted in a modern, comfortable atmosphere.New street signs decorate every street corner. Volunteers appropriately painted the poles yellow and brown, depicting the old high school's proud colors.Two islands at the top and bottom of the White Bear hill are neatly landscaped by volunteers, inviting visitors to the community in a colorful way.The community has long maintained a well groomed town park, complete with a gazebo.You would be correct if you described the borough of Summit Hill as looking pretty spiffy these days. Well, you would be almost correct.Summit Hill resident Shireen Parsons sees all the good that has gone on in her community. But, with all the new improvements, there's still some bad. It comes in the way of litter.Parsons went to the borough council meeting this week to complain about the amount of litter she sees along the streets of the borough. It's especially prevalent near the new borough hall, where the basketball courts are located."They play basketball but can't hit that 55 barrel drum," a frustrated council member Harry Miller Jr. said.Parsons claims a lot of the litter in the borough is cigarette butts. But Summit Hill isn't alone in that respect. Recently The TIMES NEWS ran photographs of students who picked up enough butts in Jim Thorpe to tightly fill a gallon jug. And it only took them an hour to fill it!In addition to cigarette butts there's also soft drink containers and other litter, thrown at random on the streets and playgrounds, completely ignoring the trash containers conveniently placed at various spots within the borough where they wouldn't inconvenience anyone.With Memorial Day, and the town's big parade coming soon, Parsons and Recreation Commission Chairman Monica Marshall are coordinating a borough litter cleanup. It's a good idea, but one that wouldn't be necessary if people only picked up their trash and put it in the proper containers.It's everybody's town, and it only takes a few seconds to properly dispose of trash. So many people - from the shade tree committee that has planted numerous trees to enhance the borough's beauty, to the volunteers who maintain the park and other beautiful spots in the borough - have stepped up to make the borough look good.It's a shame that it only takes a few people to make it look bad.Bob Urbanrurban@tnonline.com
