Perryman and Keglovits All-Star games

EAST STROUDSBURG - Seven TIMES NEWS area seniors played their last Mountain Valley Conference basketball game Monday night.

The MVC held its eighth annual Perryman and Keglovits All-Star doubleheader at East Stroudsburg University's Koehler Fieldhouse on Monday. Seniors from all the seven MVC teams, along with Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg, took part in the action.

The ladies opened the festivities and took to the floor first. The Perryman squad grabbed a 25-14 halftime lead thanks to Brittani Guerre's (PM West) seven points. Although the score was somewhat lop-sided at the break, things got tighter in the second half.

The Keglovits All-Stars, led by Carly Gallagher (ES South) and Sheena White (Lehighton), stormed back in the second half and drew to within three points at the five-minute mark. However, it would not be enough as the Perryman All-Stars held on to win 46-38.

All five local seniors competed on the Keglovits side. Pleasant Valley's Jessica Fields was joined by Lehighton's Brittany Moyer, Kelcie Smith and White. Vanessa Rimbey was also named to the team but was not present.

White tied Gallagher for the team-lead with nine points. Fields and Smith were the only other locals to score, as they finished with two and one point respectively.

"It was very interesting playing with all the girls that we went against all year," said White. "It was kind of awkward at first, but the second someone cracked a joke everyone meshed. Everyone just got along.

"For some of us this was the last basketball game we would ever play. So we just had fun with it and had a good time."

The boys then took center stage in the nightcap. This time all the local seniors participated on the Perryman side.

Unlike the girls' contest, the boys' game was close throughout. After leading by three at the break, the Perryman All-Stars found themselves down late. With just over 30 seconds remaining, Pleasant Valley's Pat Kregeloh converted on a layup to tie the score at 57.

East Stroudsburg North and Keglovits All-Star Mike John tried to hold the ball for the last shot, but had his pass stolen away by Kregeloh. Kregeloh corralled the loose ball and got it up to Stroudsburg's Matt Poorman.

While attempting to look for an opening, Poorman almost had the ball stripped away. Fortunately he regained possession and let a last-second three-pointer fly. The ball came down from its high arc and swished through the net just as the buzzer sounded for the game-winner.

Kregeloh was joined by Pleasant Valley teammate Jon McQuay. Heath Markley and Alex Matika represented Lehighton, though Matika was not at the game.

Kregeloh was the top area scorer with seven. Markley added five, while McQuay had three.

"It feels good to play with the guys I have been playing against these last four years," said McQuay. "I am done now with basketball because I won't be playing at college, so it felt good to go out in this game. Some of my friends came to watch too so it means a lot.

"It took some of us a while to get a rhythm because we haven't played since the season ended. But once we got going everything came together again."

Proceeds from this year's game will go to charities. The contest is named after area basketball legends Art Perryman and Al Keglovits, both of whom lost their lives to cancer.
