N'western and Marian sweep track meets

Northwestern Lehigh and Marian scored sweeps in track meets on Tuesday afternoon in local sports action.

TRACKCatasauqua-NorthwesternNorthwestern's Joseph Hall won four individual events to lead the Tiger boys to a 99-51 win over Catasauqua. The Tiger girls won their meet, as well, with a 125-24 breeze.Other than Hall, individual highlights were accomplished by Timothy East, who won the 400, along with both hurdle events. Martin won the 100 and 200 meters, while Stauffer won both hurdle events.On the girls side, Devin Parambo, Corinne Markiewicz and Gillian Ferko were double winners. Updike's winning throw in the javelin was 147 feet, three inches, breaking her own school, stadium and all-time TIMES NEWS AREA record of 147 feet.Stacey Wallace (discus) and Melody Kelly (pole vault) added firsts for the Raiders, who will need to win at Blue Mountain on Monday to clinch the Schuylkill D-1 title.North Schuylkill gained a split with an 80-70 win the boys meet, despite Tamaqua holding a 10-8 edge in first places. The Blue Raiders had 76 points to North Schuylkill's 35 and Panther Valley's 29.For the Raiders, Jacob Wenzel won the 100 hurdles, 200 and shot put; Tyler Hope the 200 and long jump; Zach Oliveria the 1,600; and Connor Veglia the discus. For Panther Valley, Nase won the high jump.In the girls meet, it was North Schuylkill 71, Tamaqua 50 and Panther Valley 19. Carly Fenstermacher won the 100 for Tamaqua, which also won two relays. Krapf (200) and Whildin (high jump) were winners for the Panthers.Tamaqua-Mahanoy AreaTamaqua swept Mahanoy Area, with the Raider boys winning 98-15 and the girls victorious by a 62-42 count.Jacob Wenzel set a new junior high school record with a time of 58.4 in the 400 and also won the 100 hurdles. Other Raider firsts went to Tyler Hope (100, 200, long jump), Jordan Frank (800, 1,600), Adam Toth (high jump), Adam Frantz (triple jump) and Jason Sylvester (discus).For the Raider girls, Rebecca Minehan won the 100 hurdles and high jump, with other firsts going to Carly Fenstermacher (100), Alexis Boyer (800), Jessica Thomas (200) and Carly Sassaman (shot put).Tamaqua-PottsvillePottsville swept Tamaqua, winning the boys meet 60-54 and the girls meet 79-26.Tyler Hope set a Tamaqua junior high record in the 100 meters at 11.5 while Jacob Wenzel set a new shot put mark at 42-2.
