Tamaqua dedicating 1,000-point banner on Saturday

A banner honoring Tamaqua Boys Basketball players who have scored 1,000 or more points will be dedicated during the half-time of the Tamaqua-Salisbury varsity basketball game Saturday, Jan. 2.

The junior varsity game begins at noon and the varsity game follows immediately.The banner is being presented to the district by the Tamaqua Boys Basketball Boosters.The 10 players whose names appear on the banner have been invited to attend the presentation. Those former players are Charles Baer, 1946-50, 1,347 points; Dave Evans, 1953-56, 1,007 points; Bill Yelsh, 1956-59, 1,252 points; George Krell, 1963-66, 1,147 points; Dennis Pastucha, 1969-72, 1,031; Dan Smith, 1978-81, 1,017 points; Todd McLaughlin, 1979-83, 1,479 points; Ed Titus, 1981-84, 1,537 points; Raymond Kinder, 1986-89, 1,010 points; and Joe Ligenza, 1991-95, 1,722 points.The honorees will be presented a Raider polo shirt with their names and points.The three-point rule came to Pennsylvania high school basketball during the 1987-88 season.An alumni game follows the varsity contest.
