A request by Attorney Joe McDonald on behalf of the Saeger family, for an amendment to Polk Township's zoning regulations to allow an accessory building to be made into a secondary dwelling unit for a family member 55 or older or one who suffers from a disability engendered much discussion.

The family is willing to sign documentation that once the family use is concluded the living space would not be rented out otherwise.The discussion included township Solicitor James V. Fareri, Zoning Officer Gerald Zurat, Township Engineer Russell Kresge, Supervisors Nancy May and Glenn Green. Chairman H. Lee Everett was absent due to illness, Att.McDonald and the Saeger family.Suggestions included connecting the house and the garage, but they are 30 feet apart; getting a special exception from the Zoning Hearing Board; changing the ordinance but stipulating a permit for said use be renewed annually, as well as other conditions to make sure the use did not continue when the situation changed.With a copy of the Ross Township ordinance for said situations, the supervisors moved to have the solicitor draw up a proposed zoning amendment for a dwelling unit to care for a family member, with policing issues delineated.Once completed, it will be advertised for a Public Hearing before it is brought to a vote.A 2-0 vote gave developer Steve Parisi a time extension on his The Woods preliminary subdivision plan to Dec. 30, 2010.Zoning Officer Zurat was instructed to respond to a letter that asked for a condemnation action against a property in El-Do Lakes. His inspection of the property indicated condemnation is not warranted.Announced was that Trick or Treat time in the township is from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31. Residents who will welcome special Halloween guests at that time are asked to turn on their porch lights.Also announced was that Monroe County Assistance will, in light of funding from the federal government, now accept applications for the assistance program beginning Nov. 2, rather than later in the year.A brief executive session was held at meeting's near end, the subject matter of which was a potential purchase of real estate.
