The 50th anniversary of Smokey Bear has a little more meaning this year for Shawn Kresge of Franklin Township. Kresge, 18, was one of several forest fire fighters who helped battle blazes in the western part of the country. While fighing a fire in Utah, Kresge came upon a bear cub - burned but still alive. Kresge and other crew members made an effort to reach for the cub, but upon seeing the humans it ran back into the woods. He and fellow firefighter Ed Brewster of Lehighton feel the cub survived since it ran into an area not affected by the fire.
