Bears get tennis, v-ball, soccer wins

Pleasant Valley posted victories in volleyball, tennis and boys soccer to highlight Monday's scholastic sports card.


NDGP-No. Lehigh

Highly touted Notre Dame of Green Pond downed Northern Lehigh in Colonial League soccer action, 8-2.

Nick Aquilina led the way with a hat trick for the Crusaders, while teammate Matt Elliott followed with two goals.

Offensively for the 'Dawgs, Aaron Harding and Channing Shiffert recorded scores. Luke Senko assisted on one score.

Goalie Corey Snyder had 25 saves for the Bulldogs, who were outshot in the contest 33-20.


Northwestern darted out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and eventually held on down for a 4-2 Colonial League win over Palisades.

Jeremy Ettl scored two goals to lead the Tigers offensively. Timothy East and Luke Stuby also added scores. Austin Marich assisted on two goals.

The Tigers outshot the Pirates 17-5 in the game.

Lehighton-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley scored five times in the game's first 14 minutes and cruised to a 7-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Tamaqua posted a dominating 6-0 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Lauren Mateyak got the Raiders (6-0, 4-0) on the board early and they never looked back.

Freshman Kailee Rottet added two more first half goals for a 3-0 halftime lead. Ali Updike, Jackie Stewart and Mateyak all scored in the second half.

Raider goalie Chey Bates had four saves.


ES South-Pleasant Valley

A sweep of doubles' play lifted Pleasant Valley to a 5-2 Mountain Valley Conference win over visiting East Stroudsburg South.

The Bears' pairs of Kristin Cook/Cady Hurtzig, Sarah Olah/Rachel Siegfried, Emily Young/Sarah Elmontacir and Nicole Reeder/Karli Williams got the best of their Cavalier opponents for victories in doubles' play.

Cook also posted a win in singles play.

Pleasant Valley improved to 3-3 on the season.

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

In a tight non-league match-up, Tamaqua edged Jim Thorpe for a 3-2 win.

Tamaqua's Kristin Zwolenik garnered a win at number one singles while Lauren Androkitis had an easy time at number three singles. To finish off the win, the number one doubles tandem of Jordan Nowacki and Vanessa Wagner had a straight set win.

Thorpe's Anna Domingo had a singles' win.

Marian posted an easy 313-363 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valey.

Leading the way for the winners was Nick Tristani with a medalist performance of 70. Colt teammate Drew Sherkness added a 79.

For PV (8-2), Scott Nevenglosky had a low round of 87.

Pleasant Vy.-Lehighton

Dave Behler shot a blistering seven-under-par 65 to highlight Lehighton's 14-4 Mountain Valley Conference match-play victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Indians' Jeff Newman and Cole Rex both blanked their Bears' opponent 3-0.

Katie Kenny was the lone Bear to walk off the course with a 3-0 win.

Palmerton-Pen Argyl

Palmerton's Dan Costenbader fired a three-under 67 at Sawmill Golf Course to lead Palmerton to the 387-417 Colonial League golf win.

Aiding in the effort were Ben Andrews' 75 and Mike Englert's 76 for the impressive team score.

Meanwhile, for Pen Argyl, Mike Kukla had a team low of 80.

Lehighton-ES South

Lehighton stayed unbeaten in Mountain Valley Conference action with a 25-20, 25-10, 25-14 win over host East Stroudsburg South.

Molly Harleman paced the Indians with nine kills and four aces. Amanda Windbeck finished with 14 digs, four kills and two aces; Madeline Zurn chipped in with 13 assists and six digs; and Lauren Jankowski and Sheena White both had four kills and four aces.

Lehighton is now 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the MVC.

PM East-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley remained unbeaten in Mountain Valley Conference play with a 25-8, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Pocono Mountain East.

Kayla Dorney paced the Bears' attack with 14 kills and seven aces. Priya Patel chipped in with 20 assists and two aces and Breanna Joseph added four kills and two blocks.

Pleasant Valley is now 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the MVC.

Panther Vy.-Pine Grove

Pine Grove rallied for a 25-22, 27-29, 23-25, 25-20, 16-14 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Panther Valley.

Carly Markovich led the Panthers' attack with seven service points, 36 assists and two kills. Tricia Janowiak (17 kills, 11 service points); Christa Mantz (18 kills, 10 service points); Deanna Focht (18 service points, five blocks); and Amy Yusella (eight blocks, seven kills, four service points) all played well for PV.
