Indians, Bears and Raiders notch volleyball victories

Lehighton, Pleasant Valley and Tamaqua all came up with wins in girls volleyball on Tuesday night.

VOLLEYBALLES South-LehightonLehighton swept its MVC counterpart Eastburg South on the volleyball courts, winning 25-7, 25-12, 25-15.The Indians were paced by Debra Lobien and her nine digs and nine assists. Lauren McCullion and Jessica Lobien played great defense as well, as they had 21 and 14 digs respectively.Rachel Inghram chipped in with eight digs, while Madeline Zurn helped out with seven assists and five kills.Lehighton also won the JV match, 25-19, 25-12.Pottsville-Jim ThorpeThe Crimson Tide rolled to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-12 Division I victory over the Olympians.Megan Powers recorded 15 service points, five aces and 19 assists for Pottsville. Olivia Brinich added six service points, two aces and four digs, while Hayley Dunkel had 13 kills and six blocks.Marissa Cantelmi had 10 assists and Brittany Holland added 24 digs for the Olympians.Pottsville won the JV match 25-28, 25-13.Pleasant Valley-PM WestDespite losing the first two games, Pleasant Valley bounced back and beat MVC foe Pocono Mt. West in five, 20-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 15-7.Kayla Dorney led the Bears with 22 kills and 16 digs. Teammate Priya Patel helped out with 29 assists, 14 digs and three aces.Fellow Bear Breanna Joseph had ten kills and four blocks, while Justine Maresca chipped in with 12 digs and two aces.Pleasant Valley is now 16-9 overall and 7-2 in the MVC.Lourdes-WeatherlyWeatherly was blanked at home by Lourdes, losing 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in Schuylkill League play.The Lady Wreckers (6-9, 4-7) did play well defensively. Brittany Hinkle led the team with 14 digs, while teammates Sam Strizak and Sara Dolinsky each added 13. Alyssa Kephart had 12 digs and Alicia Panzarella had 11.Pine Grove-TamaquaTamaqua swept Pine Grove, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 in Schuylkill League action.Sarah Paluck had a strong all-around game for the Raiders with nine kills, six service points, four aces and two digs. Also playing well for Tamaqua were Paige Baddick (20 assists, four service points, two kills); Sarah Lesisko (10 service points, three aces, three kills, two digs); and Tiffany Billman (five service points, six kills, three blocks)Tamaqua won the JV match, 2-0.CROSS COUNTRYLehighton-Pocono Mt. East-East Stroudsburg South-East Stroudsburg North-Pocono Mt. WestLehighton' cross country teams took part in a five-team Mountain Valley Conference meet on Tuesday.Alli Sabol was the only local to finish in the top ten. Pleasant Valley goalie Mike Cimino had 10 saves while Josh Lee made seven stops to post the shutout for the Cardinals.The loss drops the Bears to 11-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in MVC.Tamaqua-Pine GroveThe Blue Raiders lost on the road at Pine Grove, falling 3-0 in Schuylkill League play.Matt Hoffman scored twice for the Cardinals. Teammate Zach Bloch added the third.Zach Lakitsky had three saves in goal for Tamaqua. The Cardinals had a 6-4 edge in shots.Upper Dauphin-Jim ThorpeDillion Smith's late goal lifted Jim Thorpe into a 3-3 Schuylkill League tie with Upper Dauphin.Smith scored a pair of goals, including one with just 9:40 remaining that deadlocked the game. John Mazzella added a goal and an assists for the Olympians. Kyle Bradley and Zack Ligenza added assists.Upper Dauphin held a 23-8 advantage in shots on goal, but Jim Thorpe goalie Matt McCauley came up with 20 saves.FIELD HOCKEYLehighton-Pocono Mt.
