It's so important that we remember.

Last June 9, Pennsylvania State Police Troopers Joshua D. Miller suffered fatal wounds after an armed suspect fled the scene of a domestic dispute and led police on a 40-mile high speed pursuit. When the suspect was finally pulled over, gunfire erupted, killing Trooper Miller and seriously injuring Trooper Robert J. Lombardo.The suspect was killed by state police bullets, but the suspect's child was rescued from the back of the car, unharmed.The tragedy that took the life of a young trooper, who was a husband and father, should reinforce in all of us the risks law enforcement officers take every time they put on the uniform and report for duty.Life has gone on since that fateful day that Trooper Miller died, but the loss and pain will forever be felt by his family, friends and fellow officers.Legislation has been introduced in Harrisburg to designate a portion of Route 611 from Main Street in Tobyhanna to Interstate 380 in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, as the Trooper Joshua D. Miller Memorial Highway.If the bill passes the House, the bill will go to the governor for enactment next month."Designating this highway after Joshua Miller will be a solemn reminder of his dedication and service, but also a commemoration of his life and service," said Rep. Mario Scavello of the 176th. District.Various rewards, like the Act of Valor Award, has been presented to Trooper Miller's family. But renaming the highway in his honor would be a lasting tribute to his memory, and to the ultimate sacrifice he made.Those who travel the highway will see the signs with his name on it, and they'll remember, every day."This highway designation will not bring Joshua Miller back, but it will keep him in our thoughts every time we travel this stretch of road," said Scavello.We echo those sentiments.Bob Urbanrurban@tnonline.com
