Kris Graver and Eric Beers shared the wealth during the Twin 50s Modified features on Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway, each earning $2000 for their respective victories.

Graver's win was his first of the season with the class. He came into the night having had some very decent outings including three of his four top five finishes in third place. Beers, who is the point leader, notched his third verdict of '14 and it may very well have been considered one of the hardest fought wins of his career as he and Nevin George had an amazing battle.

LEHIGHTON - For Eric Beers, his win in Saturday's Mahoning Valley Speedway Modified main was all about Bob "Heavy" Scherer, his brother-in-law and longtime crew member who was under hospice care, suffering from cancer.

Thus when Beers took his place on the starting grid he knew there would be only one position he would settle for.

Starting eighth, he took advantage of a lap 17 restart to unseat Don Wagner and after some close action with Earl Paules, pulled away to his second win of the season.

Nevin George was undeniably above the rest of his Modified counterparts in winning his first feature of the year Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway.

With heavy hitters John Markovic, Eric Beers and Earl Paules trying to unseat him from the lead, George was above and beyond what they threw at him.

"I was never worried at all about them. On a lengthy green flag run our car only got better and we never ran more than a 10 lap run. The longer we ran the better we progressed," said George.

Youth has been served in the Modified ranks at Mahoning Valley Speedway as 14-year old Kyle Strohl became the youngest driver to win a feature race in the division, capturing the checkers in Saturday's 35-lap main. And he beat none other than the mentor who guided him through the first few weeks, current class champion Eric Beers.

Strohl showed his mettle the previous race when he went wheel-to-wheel with seasoned veteran John Markovic, only to fall short after his car lost power late in that event. Markovic went on to win the race.

After taking most of the season off, the "King" John Bennett, has returned to his castle. Bennett, who reigns as the undisputed leader in wins and championships at Mahoning Valley Speedway, scored his first Modified victory of 2013 and in doing so reached a new milestone in track history. He became the first driver to break into the 60 win category. He was also first at 40 and 50 victories.

Nevin George picked up his second Modified win of the season in what was one very exciting feature race. Two-wide racing took place from the get-go and it would be that type of action that played a part in George earning the win.

Matt Wentz grabbed the early lead and was clinging to the front spot as a pack of opponents were all over him. Kris Graver, Chip Santee and George were challenging him the most.

The "Fightin' Lehighton" Rick Kirkendall raced to an exciting victory in the first of twin 50 features Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway for round three of the Mahoning Modified Madness Series.

Race number two was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The popular Lehighton driver had been away from the racing scene the past few years and returned two weeks ago in Shawn Sitarchyk's SVS Abatement No. 80 car.

"It was very exciting from where I was sitting. I may have been a little rusty but it's just like riding a bike," said Kirkendall.

Racing is a game of talent and luck and Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway Eric Beers displayed both aspects in winning for a seventh time.

With two laps to go Beers, who started 10th, was looking content to just finish fourth or fifth. But, when front runners Chip Santee and Kris Graver made contact, they also collected the third place car of Nevin George. Beers had just passed Roger Coss for fourth and was able to clear the mayhem and then drove to victory.

With an exciting late race pass, Roger Coss went by race long leader Tommy Flanagan and nabbed his first Modified win of the season Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway.

The 26-year old from Lafayette, New Jersey started fourth and was tagging behind Flanagan and John Markovic for most of the race.

This has not been the typical John Bennett type of season at Mahoning Valley Speedway. "The King" has had a somewhat up and down year and had been unable to put together his usual string of top finishes. There had even been a point where the three-time Modified champ was outside the top ten in points for the first time in the last six years.

On Saturday, Lehighton's Bennett was as good as he's ever been, making a pass on leader Don Wagner after a lap 23 restart and then looking solid the rest of the way to seize his second 2012 victory.
