Down by 12 points with three bouts left in the match, Northwestern didn't just need wins. It needed some bonus points as well.

The Tigers got them quickly. Ethan Keichel (152) scored a major decision. Mitch Evans (160) pulled off a late-match pin to get his team within two points. And Michael Ortiz (170) finished off the comeback with a decision, giving Northwestern a 37-36 win over Wilson Monday night in New Tripoli.

Last year, the Jim Thorpe girls' basketball team made a name for itself in the Schuylkill League through the actions of its offense.

Last night, the Olympians gave its defense a turn to speak for itself in the team's league opener at home.

Jim Thorpe's duo of Celeste Robinson and Chelsea Smelas were able to combine for more points than Panther Valley, thanks to a successful outing by its 1-3-1 zone defense, to produce a 52-30 win.

The term quicksand in sports isn't all that different from the scientific definition.

The harder you fight and the harder you claw to get out the deeper you sink, till eventually you're buried in the sand.

That's exactly how the second half went Monday night for the Tamaqua girls basketball team. Tamaqua took a seven-point lead into the half, but North Schuylkill out-scored the Lady Raiders 25-11 in the third quarter to take home a 61-49 Schuylkill League Division I victory.

The Marian Fillies held Mahanoy Area to just four points in the first half and rolled to a win in the Schuylkill League opener for both last night.

Kaysi McLaughlin and Kelly Shober paced Marian with 11 points a piece to help down Mahanoy Area 55-16.

The Fillies locked things up by the half-way point, out-scoring Mahanoy 30-4 in the first two quarters.

Mahanoy was held to single-digits in every quarter of the ball game.

Brian Carroll asked.

Darius Clark took it upon himself to answer.

With his Jim Thorpe boys' basketball coach looking for someone to compliment PJ Johnson's efforts at the offensive end of the floor, the Olympian senior has responded to Carroll's request over the last week.

Coming off double figure scoring performances in the Olympians' two previous games, Clark capped an impressive week with a career-high 32 points on Saturday against Lehighton.

Clark's big game provided a huge spark as Jim Thorpe posted a 67-58 victory over the Indians.

Wins can't always be pretty. And Northern Lehigh's 36-22 victory over Northwestern Thursday sure does fit that description.

The Bulldogs shot 30 percent from the field, but used defense and rebounding to control the low-scoring game.

"Tonight we got the turnovers, we just didn't finish," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jeff Miller. "We had many, many lay ups and didn't finish. Give Northwestern credit. They battled and battled."

Chris Deutsch was tired of hearing it.

"When I hear about Northwestern, I hear a lot of people say we are a one-player team," Deutsch said. "It's Sara Jones and nobody else that's not true."

Thursday night, in a showdown with Colonial League rival Northern Lehigh, Jones lived up to her credentials.

It was the contributions by a number of other Tiger players, however, that made sure Jones big game wasn't wasted. Thanks to all their efforts, Northwestern was to post a 48-36 victory over the Bulldogs.
