Lady Indians are deep and talented in jumps

Jumping is an artform.

When it comes to playing sports, the ability to get off one's feet and into the air is important. It doesn't matter if an athlete is trying to sky for a rebound, rob a homerun or set a new long jump record jumping is key.

For some athletes it comes naturally. Others may need to learn the proper techniques in order to maximize their hang time. Fortunately for the Lehighton track team, it has three young ladies who know how to fly through the air pretty well.

bob ford/times news Tamaqua's Shane Oliver returns a shot during Wedenesday's match against Jim Thorpe.

You can't overestimate the value of experience.

Entering its second match in as many days, the Jim Thorpe boys' tennis team displayed its experience and talent against a young Tamaqua team on Wednesday.

The Olympians entered the match with close to 13 years of varsity experience in their starting lineup. Meanwhile, all seven Blue Raiders were either playing their first varsity matches ever or were playing new positions.

As may have been expected, it was the seasoned Olympians who posted a commanding 5-0 victory over the Blue Raiders.

It's one thing for a high school pitcher to throw a perfect pitch during a baseball game.

It's another thing for a fielder to catch a routine fly ball or even field a simple grounder.

All those things pale in comparison to the responsibilities the masked marvel behind the plate takes on.

"The catcher should be your 'field general' on the field," Pleasant Valley coach Karl Rentzheimer said. "He's the guy who's got to do the job and direct traffic when plays have to be made defensively."
