Colonial League title to be settled on mat

Rich George/Special to the TIMES NEWS Palmerton fans react during Skyler Rosenberry's recent matchup with Bangor's Andrew Lumsden. The Blue Bombers are hoping to reach the initial Colonial League wrestling playoffs, which will take place on Feb. 18.

Many times in years past the Colonial League wrestling title was already determined by the last week of the season. The league championship trophy was given to the team with the best win-loss record at the end of the season or shared among teams that tied for the best record.

But that's all changed. This year, for the first time in league history, a four-team tournament will be held to determine the league's team champ.

Two division winners and two wild cards will square off next Saturday, February 18, with the winner taking home the league trophy.

Raiders, Wreckers both suffer losses

Tamaqua and Weatherly both dropped boys basketball contests on Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Pottsville flexed its muscles and rolled to a 60-33 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Tide, now 17-1 on the season, were led by Brandon Bridy's 17 points.

Brett Kosciolek led the Blue Raiders (5-14) with 16 points.

Tamaqua won the JV game, 47-45.

Marian stuns Mahanoy

Fighting for a spot in the District 11 Class A playoffs, Marian's magic number to qualify was two heading into its match-up with Mahanoy Area. In front of a packed house in Hometown, the Colts (10-9) have now reduced that number to one after they shocked the Bears on Monday night 42-39 for the Schuylkill League Division 3 win.

The win for the Colts couldn't have come at a better time. Sitting at 9-9 before their contest with Mahanoy (16-3), Marian had to win two out of its last four games all against opponents it previously lost to this season.

Panther Vy. falls to NS

The effort was there for the Panther Valley boys' basketball team.

For 31 minutes, the Panthers gave North Schuylkill all it could handle.

In the final minute of play, however, the Spartans pulled away to deny Panther Valley's upset bid.

The 66-57 Schuylkill League loss means the Panthers now need to win three of their final four games to earn a District 11 playoff spot.

Bombers top Tamaqua

All it took was a few words from coach Mick Stefanek to inspire the Palmerton boys' basketball team prior to its non-league match-up with Tamaqua.

As they walked on to the court for the tip-off, the Bombers' starting five, which consisted of seniors Tyler Svetik, Cody Geist, Brett Snyder, Kyle Ruch, and junior Matt Leaver, looked as if every single one of them were on a mission.

Svetik said it was the motivating words from their first year coach that pushed them to the limits in earning a 60-48 victory Saturday afternoon.

Weatherly, boys girls get wins over CMVT

Weatherly boys and girls both picked up wins as did the Lehighton and Pleasant Valley girls in non-league basketball action over the weekend.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Weatherly-CMVT

couple of free throws by Luke Reiner gave the Wreckers a 52-51 non-league win over Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech.

Samson Walton finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Reiner added 11 points in the win. Ed Donnelly had a game-high 25 points, with five three-pointers for CMVT.

Lady Raiders set up showdown

The Tamaqua girls swim team remained undefeated in Schuylkill League action by cruising to a win over North Schuylkill.

The win sets up a showdown for the league title as the Lady Raiders (10-1; 4-0) travel to Blue Mountain (8-2; 4-0) on Thursday.

In other local action, the Palmerton girls basketball team qualified for the district playoffs with a win over Catasauqua.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-No. Schuylkill

Tamaqua swept North Schuylkill in swimming action on Thursday afternoon with the men gaining an 84-48 decision and the women cruising to a 132-32 victory.

Marian tops Weatherly

A first-quarter run got Marian off to a good start.

A third-quarter run by Weatherly made the Colts' comfortable 15-point halftime lead a little uncomfortable.

But in the end, the Colts did what was needed to pull out a 46-35 Schuylkill League victory.

"We said at halftime that we needed to keep them from coming out and getting a run because they're a very good team," Marian coach John Patton said. "Ron (Cann) does a great job with them. They come out and they play hard.

Quick start propels Bears

Both coaches knew what to expect heading into the Mountain Valley Conference wrestling matchup between Lehighton and Pleasant Valley. The match was expected to favor the Bears in the lighter weights, the Indians were favored in the middle weights, and the heavier weights were a toss-up.

The match went according to form as Pleasant Valley built a commanding early lead and then put it away by winning the late tossup bouts.

The result was a 47-21 Mountain Valley Conference victory.
