LAHS choral concert will be held Sunday

The Lehighton Area High School choruses will present their 96th annual spring concert, "We Are The World," on Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m.

The program will feature the schools Concert Choir, Varsity Voices (Jazz Choir), Quartet and Sextet, and Music Express Sr. (Show Choir).There will be choral selections from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.The concert is open to the public and a donation will be accepted at the door to help defray costs and support the choirs.The World Music concert will feature an African welcoming song called "Chocholoza." This is a traditional Zimbabwean folk song and originated in South Africa.Latin America is represented by the Concert Choir as they perform "Vamos A Bailar" which basically means "Let's Dance."Europe is represented by a romantic selection in French entitled "Dirait-on" from "Les Chansons des Roses" by Morten Lauridson.The choir will also perform highlights from the Motion Picture and Broadway Show, "Les Miserables."Another selection from Western Europe will be a traditional Irish folk song performed by the mixed choir.The Concert Choir will perform gospels and folk songs from North America.The Women's Choir will perform the Christina Perri hit, "Jar of Hearts" while the Men's Choir will sing the American folk song, "Whistle, Maggie, Whistle". The schools new vocal jazz choir, "Varsity Voices" will be singing the classic standard, "Route 66."The Lehighton vocal program also boasts a Girls Sextet and Male Quartet. These ensembles will be singing "Caribbean Blue" as recorded by the Irish pop sensation, "Enya". The ensembles will also perform the Bruno Mars hit "Just the Way You Are."One of the highlights of the program will be the Lehighton Area High Schools award-winning show choir, "Music Express." This ensemble has won first place awards with superior ratings as well as Grand Champion awards. The auditioned vocal group performs with costumes and choreography.Their show this year will feature songs from the Disney classic "Mulan" and "The Lion King." This energetic ensemble will sing selections from the Broadway musical, "Newsies" and "Waka Waka (This time for Africa)" from the 2010 FIFA World Cup and as recorded by Shakira. They will also perform a selection from Beyonce and an original piece written for the hit Fox television show "Glee".The accompanists for the program are Emily Cerimele, Elyse Kistler, and Noah Williams.Soloists will include: Hannah Barton, Emily Caramel, Cassidy Clark, Schuler Cordova, Spence David, Daniel Edmunds, Kurt Helideck, Leah Hoover, Elyse Kastler, Matthew McGeehan, Ellen Perkins, Michael Perkins, Daniel Pintos, Jonathan Repel, Jessica Salinas, Matthew Shandon, Brandon Slot, Jacob Williams, and Noah Williams.The choirs are under the direction of Mr. David Perkins.The choir has had a successful year so far by sending students to County Chorus, District Chorus, Regional Chorus, and National Chorus in Dallas, Texas.The Lehighton Choruses performed in Great Adventure on Friday, in a Music In The Parks Music Festival and are scheduled to perform in Walt Disney World this coming December.The choirs have performed in Georgia, California, Florida, and Canada.Some of the students have also performed in Europe on a summer music tour with American Music Abroad and studied with Show Choir Camps of America.
