A proposed Walmart just outside Walnutport would create 300 new jobs.
Average hourly wages would be $12.62 for full-time employees if the proposed 120,000-square-foot Supercenter receives the go-ahead.
Complete with a garden center and pharmacy, as well as general merchandise, the store would be built at a cornfield along Route 145 and Birch Drive in Lehigh Township.
It would be constructed on property at 499 Riverview Drive, which is owned by a group called LURRS, whose owners include the estate of James Leuthe.
The company initially pitched the idea for the store at the same location several years ago, before it deferred due to the Great Recession, and the company's decision to slow construction of stores nationwide.
The parcel is located on the corner of Birch Drive and Riverview Trust, in the General Commercial zoning district. Retail stores are permitted within this zoning district.
A meeting of the township's Zoning Hearing Board is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the township municipal building. For review is whether the company can alter the sloping terrain to accommodate the store.
If approved, the store would mean competition for the Kmart and Pathmark Stores located in nearby Walnutport.
In Oct. of 2010, Walmart opened a 204,000-square-foot Superstore just off Route 443 in Mahoning Township.
