This year's "Little Schuylkill One Fly Contest" will be held, Saturday, March 26, with registration from 7-8 a.m., at Rivers Fly Fishing, New Ringgold.
Event organizer Joe DeMarkis said this is the 10th year for the event and it keeps getting better with teams traveling from as far as New Jersey in hope of winning the title. Each team of two anglers will fish two separate beats for 90 minutes each while trying to catch the largest fish and the most fish in inches, the two award categories. A $25 donation per angler will help future stocking and stream improvement projects.
For information and registration, call the shop at 570-943-3151 or e-mail email@example.com .
Again this year, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is offering free, one-day-old chicks to clubs meeting qualifications who plan to participate in the Youth Pheasant Hunt and Youth Pheasant Season in October. In order for PGC Game Farm superintendents to plan and set hatches to accommodate requests, the Bureau of Wildlife Management must receive completed applications by Thursday, March 31.
Information and applications to participate can be downloaded from the PGC website at www.pgc.state.pa.us by clicking on "Hunt/Trap" in the menu bar at the top of the homepage, then clicking on "Hunting" in the drop-down menu listing, then clicking "Pheasant" in the "Small Game" listing and then clicking on "Cooperating Sportsmen's Clubs Pheasant Chick Program."
Outdoors-related clubs and organizations are invited to send information on events, activities and contact people and phone numbers – or e-mail addresses – to be listed free of charge for the Schuylkill County Sportsmen's Outdoors Map project being conducted by the Schuylkill Conservation District and the Schuylkill County Sportsmen's Association. As this is a long-range, continuing project, there is no way exact dates can be listed, so just general information on events such as "sporting clays, trap, 3-D, block, rifle, etc." – along with "second Sunday of the month, etc." can be listed.
Sporting goods dealers, taxidermists, dog-supply and feed dealers, camp grounds, bait shops, lawn and garden dealers, etc., and any retail outlet remotely related to the outdoors can be listed for a one-time $25 fee. Information and checks should be mailed to: Wayne Lehman, County Natural Resource Specialist, Schuylkill Conservation District, 1206 AG Center Drive, Pottsville PA 17901. Information alone can be e-mailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org .
