Another title game, another silver medal

ALLENTOWN - Another championship game, another silver medal for the Northern Lehigh girls basketball team.

The Lady Bulldogs have had tremendous seasons last year and this year, but just can't get over the hump to win a title."The only team to not win a championship," said Northern Lehigh head coach Dave Oertner. "We have one more chance and that's the hardest one."If there was ever a team that deserved it, it was these guys. You have no idea where they came from. I coached them back in elementary school when they were getting beat by 40 points. And then to get to here is quite an accomplishment. I think they deserve one more step and deserve a championship."Unfortunately, it still hasn't come.Last year, it was the 3A district title when they fell short to Allentown Central Catholic. This year, the Lady Bulldogs lost the Colonial League title to Southern Lehigh and on Friday night, fell in the District 11 2A championship to Pine Grove (41-31)."We're one of the best teams to not win a championship", the coach said. "I've been here and have been around it in other sports I coached."Central was a better team than us last year. On other nights, different things could happen, but they were the better team tonight. I hope we get a chance to play this team down the road. Every team we lost to we beat this year."We lost to Southern Lehigh and beat them once, we lost to Palmerton and beat them twice and we lost to Bangor and beat them twice. The Lady Bulldogs didn't have a good night. They had nine turnovers in the first quarter."We fell behind and we don't come back well because we're not very quick," Coach Oertner added. "And with Aimee (Oertner) hurting we knew we couldn't press them. That's why with three minutes to go I already decided to foul them."Three times during the game the referees asked me if I wanted to take her out. I said she's going to do what she can do and I thought she played great."Oertner had 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the rest of her teammates couldn't hit a shot."If we get a lead in the fourth quarter, we don't blow them," Coach Oertner said. "If we don't have the lead, we're in trouble because we can't finish with people."
