University of Connecticut tailback Robbie Frey has announced that he will not return to the Husky program for the 2011 season. Frey will receive his undergraduate degree from UConn this May in history and political science and had a fifth year of eligibility remaining based on being redshirted during the 2007 season.

Frey. a Lehighton High School graduate, said that he intends to enroll at Kutztown University in the Fall. He will play football for the Golden Bears and begin his graduate studies."This was a very tough decision for me," Frey said in a phone interview on Wednesday morning. "I went back and forth on my decision for quite a while, but in the end I decided that this was the best thing for me."Frey, who was the Huskies' backup tailback this year, would have been at the top of the depth chart heading into spring practice after starter Jordan Todman announced last month that he was entering the NFL Draft."It something that just added to the difficulty of the decision," Frey said about having a chance to be a starter next season. "But this decision is something that I started thinking about during the season."I want to be a high school teacher and a high school football coach and the transfer will help speed up that process."Frey said that his decision had nothing to do with the fact that Randy Edsall resigned as the UConn coach just days after this year's Fiesta Bowl game and that Paul Pasqualoni was eventually named the new head coach."The coaching change had nothing to do with it," he said. "Coach Pasqualoni has been great trying to help me work things out with my studies so that I would have the classes I needed if I stayed. He's also going to be a great coach and I would have loved to play for him. Despite all those things, in the end I felt transferring to Kutztown was what I had to do."Frey is leaving UConn with some impressive accomplishments and great memories.This past season, Frey carried 79 times for 389 yards and four touchdowns. For his career, Frey scored nine touchdowns, including two kickoff returns for scores. He ended his Huskies' career in the Fiest Bowl when he returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Oklahoma."When I came out of high school I had my college choices narrowed down to Akron and Connecticut," said Frey. "I couldn't be more thrilled with my decision. At Connecticut, I got to go to four bowls games and I was part of two Big East championships."In addition, I've made great friendships, got an outstanding education and got a chance to work with some of the best coaches and players anywhere. I'm really going to miss the school and my teammates."
