Trailer breaks loose, seriously injures woman driver

A woman driver was seriously injured in a crash Wednesday night around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Seneca Road and SR443 in Mahoning Township. The crash occurred as a New England Motor Freight tractor trailer was traveling south on Seneca Road and attempted to make a right turn onto Route 443 west. In doing so the trailer broke free from the truck tractor, causing it to cross the roadway into the eastbound lane where it struck a late model Chevrolet pick-up truck. The woman was trapped in the wreckage for about an hour. Firefighters from Mahoning Valley and Lehighton used hydraulic extrication equipment to free her. She was treated at the scene and flown via PennStar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. The roadway was closed for an hour and a half. Township police, who are investigating, did not have further details available this morning.
