Chestnuthill Elementary may close its doors

Pleasant Valley School District administrators presented to the PVSD school board why they felt the board needed to consider closing Chestnuthill Elementary School. A hearing was held at Pleasant Valley Middle School on Thursday, Dec. 8 where it was presented to the public with an opportunity for them to respond.

Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent said that there has been a significant decline in the district's enrollment over the last few years, including Chestnuthill's.Currently, Chestnuthill, which holds kindergarten through fourth grade, has an enrollment of 196 students."We can comfortably place those students and staff at Pleasant Valley Elementary. There are nine full-time teachers but with some retirements, that number would be less," he said.He added that a conservative estimate of savings to the district if the school closed would be about $815,000."But it could be more. The board could make a decision sometime in March 2012," he said.
