In a unanimous decision on Tuesday night, Franklin Township Board of Supervisors terminated the engineering firm for the public sewer system by the end of this month.

Spotts, Stevens and McCoy, which has offices in the Lehigh Valley and Reading, was in charge of overseeing the installation of the sewer system in Franklin Township.Following completion of the multimillion-dollar project, supervisors had asked the firm to stay on as the township's engineers for any future sewer concerns.The last major project assigned to SSM by supervisors was the installation of a flow meter to measure the sewage flow of Franklin Township residents to the Central Carbon Municipal Plan.Prior to that, Franklin Township had relied on Weissport's sewer system to measure flow.When Weissport's system failed, there was no way for either community to measure flow, which determines the costs for both communities.Bellview Pump, Walnutport, was the low bidder to install the flow meter for Franklin Township and had bid $36,290 and SSM was to oversee the project.In a motion preceding the termination of SSM, the supervisors had approved the purchase of a flow meter from W.G. Malden Company for $5,330 to replace the one that was installed in June 2010 and has never worked correctly.W.G. Malden of East Earl was hired after supervisors sought quotes from three companies.W.G. Malden is a company that specializes in flow meters.Supervisors also unanimously agreed to not pay a $1,700 repair bill for the flow meter to SSM.Rod Green, chairman, said that the flow meter has never worked correctly and the board has had enough."We don't want to keep paying for their screw ups," said Green.Green said that there were several other instances where the board felt that SSM failed to provide adequate services to Franklin Township.
