The Lehighton Police Department did traffic checks last month at four locations where the speed limit is 25 mph.
Had they ticketed every speeding vehicle, they could have written 126 traffic citations.
At all four locations, the average speed was over 40 mph.
Two drivers at one location – Gypsy Hill Road – were clocked at 50 mph.
A total of 51 tickets were issued at the sites.
The locations of the speed checks were:
Ÿ Gypsy Hill Road on April 2 between 1:43 and 4 p.m. Average speed was 42.5 mph. In that span, 65 drivers exceeded the speed limit by more than 10 mph.
Nine drivers got tickets for speeding.
Two drivers were clocked at driving at 50 mph.
Ÿ On April 1, between 3:40 and 8:45 p.m., Lehighton police used their ESP (Excessive Speed Preventor) in the 300 block of South Seventh Street. Seventeen drivers were clocked at exceeding the speed limit, with 10 traffic citations issued.
One driver was clocked at 51 mph.
Ÿ On April 6, the speed check as done in the 400 block of South Ninth Street from 3:20 to 7:34 p.m. In that span, 33 drivers were clocked speeding, meaning they were exceeding the 25 mph limit by over 10 mph. The fastest speeds recorded were 47 and 48 mph.
There were 24 citations given by police.
