Nuclear power costly, dangerous

Dear Editor:

Recently President Obama pledged $8 billion for new nuclear reactors. I am personally frustrated with Obama's plans to promote nuclear power and am concerned that the administration has not planned a strategy for safe, long-term storage of radioactive waste.Obama claims that nuclear power will allow us to transition into utilizing renewable energies. However I am pessimistic that the president will endorse renewable energy such as wind and solar power in the future.Nuclear power is costly, potentially catastrophic, inefficient, and Uranium is a non-renewable resource and nuclear power plants are targets for terrorist attacks. In the State of the Union Address Obama repeatedly referred to the importance of clean energy. In my opinion clean coal, nuclear power, and opening of new areas for offshore drilling do not represent clean energies or progress. Increased production and incentives for this type of "clean energy" are a step in the wrong direction.Emily Mead39 University DriveBethlehem, PA 18015
