Tamaqua police have charged Matthew Martin, 30, of Gamelands Road, Walker Township, with illegal transfer, no insurance, no registration and driving at an unsafe speed following a traffic stop in the borough on May 25 at 1:16 p.m.

Police Chief Dave Mattson followed Martin in a blue GEO that appeared to speed up. The driver made several turns, eventually going in a complete circle. As the chief followed him Martin continued to speed up on Union and Pine streets before being stopped behind traffic on N. Railroad Street, where he backed up into the borough parking lot.When asked for his license and registration Martin stated he did not have any of it and that he had bought the car from Matt Hartranft for $200 but had not done the paperwork on it. The license plate on the car was Martin's but did not belong to the car, police said.The car was impounded by Hope's Towing. Martin was advised that he could reclaim the vehicle with proof of ownership, following the investigation and that he would receive citations by mail.
