A Lewistown Valley turkey farm is scheduled to receive national news attention next week.

Koch's Turkey Farm, 416 Valley Rd., Tamaqua, will be featured by "CBS Evening News" as part of a two-part piece titled "Antibiotics and Our Food".The piece is scheduled to run on Thursday, Jan. 21, during the 6:30 p.m. evening newscast, said Barb Koch of the farm's sales department.The segment is airing during the same month the farm is introducing a new turkey product.For the story, CBS sent network anchor and television personality Katie Couric to interview Duane Koch, vice president of Koch's Turkey Farm. The interview took place on Jan. 6, at which time it was taped for the upcoming segment.Koch's Turkey Farm provides the antibiotic-free turkey for Applegate Farms, located in Branchdale, N.J., which is then used in food products produced by the latter, such as deli meats and turkey thighs."CBS is doing a news piece on antibiotics in food and they contacted Duane to come down to the farm," said Barb Koch. "They also interviewed the founder of Applegate Farms for the piece."Barb mentioned that Duane, who is her brother, said the interview with Couric went well."He felt Katie was very gracious," she noted.Koch's Turkey Farm is a family farm started by Lowell and Betty Koch in 1953. Koch's was one of the first farms to raise antibiotic-free turkeys."Everything we do is antibiotic-free and vegetarian-fed," stated Barb. "We have been working with Applegate Farms for a long time with this."Applegate Farms is one of Koch's biggest customers, as is Whole Foods Markets, a national company which has its middle Atlantic regional headquarters in Washington, D.C,Koch's Turkey Farm is working with Whole Foods on its latest venture: cranberry turkey burgers.The new turkey burgers, like the rest of Koch's products, are all natural."We are introducing our new cranberry turkey burger this week at the new Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.," explained Barb. "This cranberry burger combines the low fat health benefits of our antibiotic free, all natural turkey with the antioxidant benefits of cranberries."These new burgers will be available at Koch's Turkey Farm store and at our stand at the Hometown Farmers Market on Wednesdays," she added.
