Weissport Council seated a new council member and mayor and two other members who had previously served the borough were also added to the borough slate.

Taking her first seat as a council member was Paulette Watson, who took one of the slots in the November election, along with Jonathan Troutman, who became Weissport's newest mayor. Also sworn in were Tim Rehrig, who had last served as a council member two years ago and Gene Kershner, who had been a council president several years ago.Rehrig and Kershner were both nominated for the presidency, with Mayor Troutman breaking the tie in Rehrig's favor. Kershner was then nominated for vice president. Sue Pywar was asked to be president pro temp., which means she will step up to chair meetings if both the president and vice president of council are absent.After Rehrig and Kershner took their seats, president Rehrig began his duty of filling borough vacancies and organizing committees for 2010.Linda Shoenberger was named chairman of the vacancy board and Att. Michael Ozalas was reappointed as borough solicitor. Carbon Engineering was named borough engineer and Kirk Summa and Co. were named independent auditors.THE TIMES NEWS was named the advertising agency.Depositors of borough monies were selected: PLIGHT, Mauch Chunk Trust Company and M&T Bank.Dana Brubaker was named secretary-treasurer.Tim Rehrig and Gene Kershner also stepped up to volunteer to represent the borough at the Tax Consolidation Committee meetings.Larry Dreher was tentatively named to represent the borough on the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission.Rehrig said that since no one from council can attend the Central Carbon Municipal Authority meetings, he is opening the position to the community. Meetings are held at 4 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month. Anyone interested in representing the borough at the meeting should contact a council member.Pywar also will represent the borough at the Regional Comprehensive Plan Committee meetings.Tammy Solt was appointed to a four-year seat on the Zoning Hearing Board.Committees were assigned to council members: Community Development, Watson and Pywar; Public Safety, Kershner and Arland Moyer; Public Safety, Kershner and Moyer; Public Facilities, Moyer and Pywar; Health and Sanitation, Watson and Rehrig; Administration and Financial, Rehrig and Kershner.After the reorganization was complete, council discussed the dump truck issue. Moyer noted that the blue dump truck's clutch is not functional and repairs would cost approximately $2,000, but that the truck is in such bad shape that it isn't worth repairing.Council approved looking into the costs to attend the State Surplus Auction to seek out a functioning vehicle.At the request of police officer Steve Mansueto, council approved the purchase of two snow tires for one of the police cars.At the request of borough worker Dennis Moser, council approved that he could spend up to $150 for maintenance tools and shop vacuum.Pywar asked if council could send a letter to Educare to ask them to better supervise their students at the playground that is still under installation phase because of vandalism.
