Hospice training

PinnacleHealth Hospice will provide volunteer training to area residents willing to provide assistance and support to terminally ill individuals and their families. Training sessions will begin the week of April 13, with daytime and evening sessions to accommodate potential volunteer's schedules.

Evening sessions will begin April 13, from 6-9 p.m., then continue every Tuesday through May 4. Daytime sessions will begin April 15, from 1-4 p.m., and continue through May 6. All sessions will be held at 301 Norwegian Plaza, Pottsville.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met March 23 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 38 members in attendance.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by Secretary Florina Martin and Treasurer Shirley Becker, who reported sending get well cards to Jim Valentine, Dorothy Schmerfeld, Sene Horan, Jane Springer and Gail Wall. A discussion was held concerning the annual banquet, scheduled for May 11, noon, at the Ryan Township Fire Company.

Gardening helpline

The Penn State Master gardener program has established a horticulture helpline to answer gardening-related questions from Schuylkill County residents.

Beginning April 5, and continuing through Sept. 29, master gardener volunteers will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday.

Information concerning lawns, landscaping and gardening will be available. Anyone with a question related to trees, flowers, shrubs, grass, garden soil, vegetables, pH, insects and/or diseases will now have their answers just a phone call away.

Dog walk

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will host its Third Annual Dog Walk on May 1, following along the Schuylkill Valley Heritage Trail. The walk will begin at the Newkirk Tunnel Environmental Education Area along SR209, just west of Tamaqua.

Participants will head west for one mile, then return to the registration area.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with the walk starting at noon. Registration is required.

Pledge forms are available at the Citi Financial office, located in the former Jamesway Mall, and Tamaqua Borough Hall.

The Tamaqua Rotary Club is sponsoring an Omega Health Screen on Saturday, March 27 from 7-9:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 West Broad Street.

The health screen is being performed by Quest Diagnostics, Wyomissing and is a screening consisting of blood tests and a lifestyle evaluation. This is a personal health screen to help your doctor identify many serious but treatable health issues. All results are strictly confidential.

Garden club

The South Schuylkill Garden Club will host its Annual Tea on April 24, at 2 p.m., at the Schuylkill County Country Club, SR443 in Orwigsburg. This year's theme will be "Chocolate and Roses," featuring the Hershey Rose Garden and its founder, Milton Hershey.

Sorority news

Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met March 17 at the Restaurant at the Station for refreshments and a program on the ghosts associated with the station. The program was presented by Donna Sterling. The group then adjourned to Sterling's home for the business session and an exchange of Secret Sister Easter gifts.

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee met last Thursday to review current projects and start planning new ones. Chairwoman Louise Howells conducted the business session. The group agreed to waive the reading of the previous meeting's minutes in order to provide more time for the guest speaker.

The Decorating Committee for the Parents of the Tamaqua Class of 2010 meets every Monday, at 7 p.m., on the third floor of the Tamaqua Elks, 301 W. Broad St.

Members continue working on decorations for the annual All Night Party.

Primitive Methodist

The Rev. Rodney Hall will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include a children's sermon. Nursery care is available. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Writers conference

The Black Diamond Writers Network will conduct the region's first writers conference on April 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts Center, 1440 Mahantongo St., Pottsville.

Keynote speaker will be Kathryn Crofy, owner of Her topic will be "Coming to Terms With Life: An Artist's Approach."

Day long events will also include eight workshops on writing-related topics as well as an author book fair.
