Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met May 25 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 39 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session.

Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Secretary Florina Martin provided a reading of the previous meeting's minutes, presented the financial report in the absence of the treasurer and offered inspirational readings. Birthday greetings were offered to Melanie Weicker and Thelma Caravello.

Alzheimer's walk

The Second Annual Alzheimer's Family Fun Festival and Memory Walk is being planned for Oct. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Carbon County. As part of this year's festivities, a Wall of Memories pictorial display will feature photos of local people suffering with Alzheimer's disease.

To have a loved one included in the display, mail photos to 38 Chestnut Hill, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. At this time, there are no provisions to have photos returned, so pease don't send your original photos. For more information on the event, contact Kathy Ruff at (570) 645-3059.

Perfect attendance

Several students in the Tamaqua Area School District's three elementary schools were presented with perfect attendance awards at the conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year.

Students at Tamaqua Elementary School included: Julia Bailey, Sarah Bailey, Emily Barrett, Brian Bergstresser, Myah Bloss, Kayla Frye, Antonetta Gerace, Alyssa Kattner, Sarah Martinez, Camerin Miller, Damian Miller, Sierra Minarchick, Julio Perez, Connor Ruch, Donovan Yulanavage and Kayla Zamudio.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 76 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "What Makes A Dad." Secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld provided her weekly report.

The next meeting will be held June 24, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

Gardening help

Penn State Master Gardeners hosts a gardening helpline, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 29, as well as conducting workshop sessions to help area residents.

Free movie nights will be held at the East End Playground in Tamaqua. Movie nights begin today, June 21, at 8:30 p.m. The first movie will be "Toy Story."

The film "Up" will be presented on July 5.

Also at the playground, the Cressona Band will perform a free concert on July 14, beginning at 7 p.m.

Summer lunch

The South Ward Playground Association is conducting a free summer lunch program for all local children up to and including the age of 18. Lunches are served weekdays, from noon to 1 p.m., at the South Ward Playground.

The program is an off shoot of the free school lunch program, with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The non-discriminatory program is open to all children regardless of race, origin, religion, etc. In addition to a healthy lunch, participants will be offered a variety of summer activities.

Calvary Evangelical United Methodist

Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Catawissa and Valley roads, Lewistown Valley, will hold morning worship for everyone on 10:25 a.m. on "Father's Day" Sunday, June 20. The Rev. Brian Reading will deliver a message titled "Thanks for Being My Father."

Sunday school for everyone will be held at 9:15 a.m. Nursery service is available as needed.

Evening Praise and Bible Study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Prayer and Share will be held on Wednesday, June 23, for all ages.

Black Diamond Writers

Michael B. Kaminski, publisher of WOMAN Magazine, will be the featured speaker at a joint meeting of the Black Diamond Writers' Network and the Pa. Women's Press Association on Saturday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30. S. Railroad Street.

Kaminski will educate writers on how to write for a publication with a purpose, focusing on the creation, mission and purpose of his magazine. He will explain what he looks for in potential writers and what makes a good and a bad pitch.

Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin. Birthday greetings were offered to Helene Clouser.

Carmen and Alberta Corch were congratulated on their 60 wedding anniversary.

Florina Martin provided inspirational readings.
