The Southward Precinct, Tamaqua, is in need of a majority inspector and minority inspector for the May 18, 2010 Election Day. A Republican and a Democrat are needed. The candidates should be actively registered voters.

Direct any inquiries to Frannie Brennan, director of the Election Bureau at (570) 628-1467 or write to 420 N. Centre St., Pottsville, PA 17801. Anyone interested in being a poll inspector should contact Brennan by Friday, April 30.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 76 members in attendance. Two new members were welcomed to the group, Shirley Driesbach and Rose Kasch. The business session was conducted by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld, who also offered her weekly report later in the meeting. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Little Things."

It was reported that Rose Fritz is a patient in the St. Luke's Miners Memorial Geriatric Center and the 2010 membership reached the 150 mark.

Tamaqua Area High School Principal RuthAnn Gardiner has announced a Freshman Orientation will be held for students and parents of incoming freshman for the 2010-11 school year.

The orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium.

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Tamaqua Community Center.

The ESRC meeting is open to the public.

West Penn citizens

The West Penn Township Concerned Citizens will meet on Monday, at 7 p.m., at the West Penn Township Municipal Building.

Topics for discussion will include a presentation by West Penn Chief of Police Brian Johnson concerning Crime Watch.

All township citizens are welcome to attend.

Democrats to meet

The Eastern Schuylkill Democrats will meet today, at 7:30 p.m., at the East End Fire Company.

Class of 2010

Parents of the Tamaqua Class of 2010 meet every Monday, at 7 p.m., on the third floor of the Elks Building, 301 W. Broad St.

Gardening help

Penn State Master Gardeners will conduct a workshop on small scale vegetable gardening this Saturday as part of a continuing educational series for 2010. The class will be held at the Schuylkill County Extension Conference Room, from 9 a.m. to noon, at 1202 Ag Center Dr., Pottsville. Other workshops in the series will include sessions on Early Crop Harvest on June 19 and Summer Crop Harvest on July 17.

The Master Gardener Program also hosts a gardening helpline, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 29.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 13 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 39 members in attendance.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation.

Reports were presented by Secretary Florina Martin and Treasurer Shirley Becker. Secretary Becker reported sending a get well card to Gayle Wall, who is a patient at a rehab center in New Bloomfield. A donation was sent to the Coventry Home in memory of Theresa Reed.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 79 members and one guest, Amelia Stock, in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Jean Machamer, who also offered several readings later in the meeting. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Nothing is Impossible."

Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and Vice President Doris Brobst, who added Leona Machay and Tom Hanlon to the sick list.

Garden club

The South Schuylkill Garden Club will host its Annual Tea on April 24, at 2 p.m., at the Schuylkill County Country Club, SR443 in Orwigsburg. This year's theme will be "Chocolate and Roses," featuring the Hershey Rose Garden and its founder, Milton Hershey.
