Garden Club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met Sept. 27 in the social hall at Zion's Church in the Lewistown Valley. President June Leiby conducted the business session.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 27 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 43 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting.

Vice President Rhoda Purnell offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. Birthday greetings were extended to Betty Brobst and Julia Clouser. Get well cards were sent to Jane Springer and Helene Clouser.

Florina Martin and Shirley Becker provided inspirational readings.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center is conducting a non-perishable food drive to benefit the Tamaqua Salvation Army Food Bank. Donated goods will be accepted Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., through Nov. 1.

The center has a variety of activities planned for October, including a pancake breakfast on Oct. 4.

Tamaqua Public Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for National Book Month, which will be held in October. Activities will be held throughout the month, including amnesty week and Teen Read Week.

Amnesty Week will be held Oct. 9 through Oct. 15. Fees on all overdue books will be waived during this time. This includes all late fees, giving procrastinators an opportunity to return late books, allowing other patrons to enjoy these editions.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Sept. 8 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 87 members in attendance. One new member, Betty Connely, was welcomed to the group.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading.

Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "Little Acts of Kindness."

Vice president Doris Brobst and secretary Joan Ann Garber provided their reports.

Doris Skeath was added to the sick list.

Members were treated to pizza and drinks.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Sept. 14 at the home of Patti Confer. Following the business session, Fred Confer presented a tutorial demonstration on creating and baking apple pies.

During the business session, topics of discussion included information on personalized cake pans; a pancake breakfast; and a fall social.

The next regular meeting will be held Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at the home of Donna Sterling, Lake Hauto

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 13 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 41 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. One new member, Paul Kunkel, was welcomed.

Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation and moment of silence was held in honor of those who lost their lives during the 9-11 terror attacks. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. Carol Sedlak and Jane Springer were added to the sick list.

Halloween parade

Registration forms are now available for the 45th Annual Tamaqua Halloween Parade set for Tuesday, Oct. 25, beginning at 7 p.m. Forms are available at the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Office, 114 W. Broad St. Completed forms must include the name, address and phone number of a contact person, as well as the entrant's theme, number of floats, vehicles and marchers.

All participants will be called in advance of the parade with their position, set up location and entry number. The rain date is Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Band festival

The 15th Annual Land of the Running Water Marching Band Adjudication, hosted by the Tamaqua Area Raider Marching Band, will be held Sept. 24 at the Tamaqua High School Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature a dozen participating local high school marching bands; including Bangor, Emmaus, Exeter Township, Hamburg, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Panther Valley, Pottsville Area, Southern Lehigh, Tri Valley, Williams Valley and Wilson.

Gates will open at 5 p.m.and the competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The September meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randolph Gormley, James Gormley, Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker, Health Officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.
