Older and bolder

The Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group is back in action.

The regular Wednesday meetings are held at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., and include a light luncheon.

A guest speaker from Diakon will attend the March 21 meeting with an exerette demonstration. Diakon offers a variety of services to those age 50 and older.

The March 28 meeting will include hand bell rehearsal and use of the computer lab.

Class of 1943

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 will see a change of plans for its 69th anniversary reunion, which will be held on June 16. Due to a reconstruction project at the Owl Creek Dams, the reunion has been moved to La Dolce Casa, 16 W. Broad St., Tamaqua. Festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. Reservation deadline will be June 1. Garden club scholarship

The South Schuylkill Garden Club is offering a $750 scholarship to a selected Schuylkill County student planning to further his or her education in the field of horticulture, floriculture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, city planning, land management or related subjects.

Interested students must submit an application, with a letter of interest, two reference letters and an official high school/college transcript.

Lenten services

The Tamaqua Ministerium is sponsoring a series of interdenominational Midweek Lenten services.

All of the services will be held at noon with a light luncheon to follow.

The schedule includes: March 14, First United Methodist, 124 W. Broad St.; March 21, Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St.; and March 28, St. Jerome's Catholic, 266 W. Broad St.

The public is welcome to attend any and all of the services.

Sorority news

Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Feb. 22 at the Sports Zoo in Lansford, complete with Mardi Gras celebration.

Donna Gerber served as hostess, serving traditional New Orleans food such as gumbo, jambalaya and King Cake.

The March 10 breakfast fundraiser has been canceled.

A used clothing drive has been scheduled for June 2.

Members discussed the Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt, which will be held March 31, at noon, at the Bungalow Park.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Feb. 28 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 49 members in attendance. Two new members were welcomed, Eleanor Arner and Joyce Krell.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. A get-well card was sent to Neal Flexer.

Nancy and Bill Godanis and Dolores and Roger Walck were congratulated on their anniversaries.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, Triad and growth group leaders will meet at 11:45 a.m., CareNet Steering Committee meets at 2 p.m. and the monthly service at the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise will be at 6 p.m.

Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for spring with a variety of activities, including some spring cleaning.

Spring story time sessions are scheduled to begin March 12-13. Sessions are open to preschoolers, ages 2-6, and are held Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10-11 a.m. The weekly meetings will conclude the week of April 16.
