High school parking

The Tamaqua Area School District will have 69 parking spaces available for senior class members for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications will be available the week of July 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Completed forms must be returned to the senior high office no later than July 30.

A lottery will be held Aug. 6 to determine which students receive a parking permit as well as space assignments. Students will then be notified by mail. Permits will be issued from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 20.

The Trinity United Church of Christ in Tamaqua is having their monthly Community Soup Social this Saturday (July 7) from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in their social hall.

The meal is free to the public and everybody is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends.

The regular meeting of the Tamaqua Borough Council is canceled today.

Their next meeting, open to the public, will be held Tuesday July 17 at 7 p..m. at the Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad Street.

Members and volunteers with the Tamaqua American Legion will be holding their annual 4th of July firing detail 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Depot Square Park in Tamaqua. The public is encouraged to stop and watch.

TASD news

Tamaqua Area School District students participating in sports and/or any extracurricular activity, or who have a school parking permit is subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as established in 2010. Random drug testing of non-participating students is also available if the district receives a parental request. Students must provide a signed parental consent form before participating.

Summer concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the sixth year of its popular free Summer Concert Series, with mini concerts scheduled every other Thursday into September. This week's event will feature the country music of Jeremiah Jones.

Additional events will include: July 19, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer (blues); Aug. 2, Lizard Creek (Celtic); Aug. 16, Large Flower Heads (60s classics); Aug. 30, The Todd Wolfe Band; Sept. 13, It Takes Two (variety).

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met June 21 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 82 members in attendance.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Little Things." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met June 14 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 89 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading.

Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "At Dawn's First Light." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.

A get-well card was sent to Joan Deitrich.

Upcoming events include a pizza party in June, a Chinese auction and trip to Shady Maple or Vanity Fair in July and a picnic in August.

Computer workshops

The Tamaqua Salvation Army is sponsoring a series of free computer workshops designed to help participants become more familiar with computers and their uses.

Conrad Flynn of Concur New Media will conduct a workshop on "Social Media" from 4-5:30 p.m. on June 25.

The course offers a basic understanding on ways to use social media, including Facebook and Twitter, for personal and/or business use.

Judy Gordon, customer service representative from Wells Fargo Bank, will offer a workshop on online banking from 10-11:30 a.m. on July 2.
