The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a free concert today, with performance by Wildcat, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of their Summer Concert Series. The concert will be held on the platform of the Tamaqua Railroad Station. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Rush taxes

The office of Rush Township Tax Collector Dolores Walck will be closed Aug. 16, from 9-11 a.m.

The office will be open that day from 6-8 p.m.

Additionally, as stated on the tax bills, the office will be closed on Aug. 9-10.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school classes meet at 9:30 a.m.

A free movie in the park will be played tonight starting at 8:30 p.m. at the East End Park, Mountain Avenue, in Tamaqua. The concession stand will also be open. The movie will be Secretariat, rated PG. The movie is provided courtesy of the East End Park Association.

Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Tamaqua on July 20, collecting 48 units of the "gift of life." Two first time donors, Deanna Hill and Olga Rosado, participated.

Local volunteers assisting Red Cross personnel were Jean Stevens, Dolly Shirey and Bob Shirey. The Salvation Army gym was transformed into a blood collection center through the efforts of Randy Gormley, Bob Zeplin, Jack Quinn, Mike Trubilla and Joe Rimm.

This visit was sponsored by the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Tamaqua's annual Sidewalk and Community Yard Sale, organized by the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce, will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or later. The yard sale and sidewalk locations are listed in today's TIMES NEWS or can be picked up at the Chamber office today before 5 p.m. or during the sale, 114 West Broad Street. Class of 1957

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1957 will meet Aug. 20 at the home of John and Betty Lezousky, Schnecksville.

Classmates will meet at 1 p.m. to begin planning a 55-year anniversary reunion, which will be held in 2012.

All members of the class are welcome to attend.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met July 28 at Heisler's Dairy Bar. The meeting included an installation of officers for 2011-2012. The officer slate included: Lori Schmerfeld, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Donna Sterling, recording secretary; Pat Kibbler, corresponding secretary; and Marie Umbriac, treasurer.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held a Summer picnic at the Grier City Playground with 51 members and 2 guests in attendance. The meal was catered by Christy Joy.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld led the group invocation. Activities included a Chinese Auction and bingo.

The group meets the second and fourth Monday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.
