Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met July 10 with 65 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session.

Several members were welcomed back, including Nora Scheidy, Florina Martin, Rosetta Folk, Rose Vallee and Pat Brown. The meeting included a pizza party.

The annual picnic will be held on Aug. 14 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club's grove.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

Raider Band

The Tamaqua Raider Band will hold summer rehearsals from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday and again on July 22. These rehearsals are for all instrumentalists.

Old and New Night will be held on July 29. New members will rehearse from 4-6 p.m. All instrumentalists and majorettes will rehearse from 6- 8 p.m.

Band Camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 4. Camp is mandatory for all band members.

All rehearsals will be held in the band room.

Majorettes will then continue to rehearse from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Freshman orientation

Stephen Toth, principal at Tamaqua Area High School, has announced that freshman orientation for the 2014-2015 school year will begin at 7 p.m. on Aug. 13, in the school district auditorium.

Parents and new students will be provided information on student schedules and activities, facilities and discipline.

Tours will not be given that evening, but may be scheduled by calling 570-668-1901, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Board of Health

The July meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the Tamaqua Municipal Building with Randolph Gormley, James Gormley, Shirley Becker, Earl Boettger, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Matt Meyers, code enforcement officer, in attendance.

Meyer reported no new licenses were issued since the June meeting. The code enforcement office received and adjusted numerous complaints in June.

There were no cases of reportable diseases during the last month.

Night out

The Tamaqua Safety Initiative is organizing events for National Night Out, an effort to help fight crime on America's streets. The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 5, with most activities planned for the area near the Tamaqua Art Center at 125 Pine St.

Entertainment will be provided by "Original Sounds." To date, 15 organizations have indicated they will be taking part in the event.

The Tamaqua Salvation Army will be conducting a Kidz Karnival, from 2 to 9 p.m. that day at the North Railroad Street parking lot.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 24 at the home of Helen Moyer. A number of special guests from the Schuylkill Garden Club were in attendance.

During the business session, the group discussed the upcoming Schuylkill County Fair, then toured Moyer's gardens, which feature a number of unusual flowers and shrubs.

The next meeting will be held July 22 at Leiby's Grove. Hot dogs will be provided. Members are to bring a covered dish, dinnerware and beverages.

Dear Tamaqua

The next "Dear Tamaqua" Write Night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 8 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.

"Dear Tamaqua" is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Tamaqua Safety Initiative. It was launched to encourage community wide pride, focusing on Tamaqua's unique identity.

Residents are encouraged to share thoughts and stories of the community through written word, original music, video, poetry, visual art, etc.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for July including celebrating Christmas in July on July 25.

Other activities for the month include: July 2, sing a long with Audrey; July 8, cookie bingo; July 9, scrapbooking; July 10, presentation on "Dear Tamaqua Project;" July 11, National Blueberry Muffin Day; July 16, Salvation Army service; July 17, bingo; July 21, watermelon pizza; July 23, special breakfast; and July 29, National Lasagna Day.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 10 at the home of John and Joan Nortavage with 13 members in attendance.

Following the business session, the group enjoyed a tour of the Nortavage's personally planned and created gardens.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Helen Moyer and will include a tour of the gardens.

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 19 with 62 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation, "The Summer Day."

Senior drivers

The Tamaqua Salvation Army will hosting AARP Safe Driving classes, full certification and refresher, in August. The classes are open to anyone age 50 or older.

The full certification, eight-hour class will be held in two sessions, from noon to 4 p.m. on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19. The refresher class, which is four hours, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Aug. 21.

James Greaser will be the instructor for all sessions. The refresher course is available to those who have completed the full certification class within the past 36 months.
