Birthday party

Helen Correll of town was the guest of honor at a celebration held at Vonn's Restaurant at the Tamaqua Train Station in honor of her 86th birthday. The event was attended by 14 members of Helen's immediate family, including all of her children and grandchildren.

Raider Band

The Tamaqua Raider Band will hold its next summer rehearsal on Old and New Night, which will take place July 30. New members will rehearse from 4-6 p.m. All instrumentalists and majorettes will rehearse from 6-8 p.m.

West Penn Lioness

The West Penn Lioness Club met July 1 and presented a monetary award to the highest ranking West Penn graduate of the Tamaqua Area High School Class of 2013. Janelle Cinicola was the special guest and honoree. She is the daughter of Michelle and Brian Cinicola.

East End auxiliary

Supporters of the East End Fire Company are in the process of starting an auxiliary unit. A planning session is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the fire company.

Cressona band

The Cressona Band will perform its annual free concert at the East End Playground at 7 p.m. on July 24. The band's performances include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear. The public is welcome to attend.

Rain date will be July 31, same time and place.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club will hold its annual picnic July 23, at 6 p.m., at Leiby's Grove. For more information, call (570) 668-4288.

The most recent meeting was held at the home of Evelyn Adams and included a tour of her gardens and a discussion on the different varieties of plants and trees she grows.

High school parking

The Tamaqua Area School District will have 67 parking spaces available for senior class members for the 2013-2014 school year. Applications will be available this week at the senior high school office. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Completed forms must be returned to the senior high office no later than July 30.

A lottery will be held Aug. 6 to determine which students receive a parking permit as well as space assignments. Students will then be notified by mail. Permits will be issued from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 12.

TASD news

Tamaqua Area School District students participating in sports and/or any extracurricular activity, or who have a school parking permit are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as established in 2010. Random drug testing of non-participating students is also available if the district receives a parental request. Students must provide a signed parental consent form before participating.

Middle school news

Christopher Czapla, principal of the Tamaqua Area Middle School has announced an orientation session will be held Aug. 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Parents of sixth graders, as well as seventh and eighth graders new to the district, are welcome to attend.

Information will be presented on student schedules, activities, facilities and discipline.

Board of Health

The Tamaqua Board of Health held its July meeting with Randolph Gormley, Earl Boettger, James Gormley, Shirley Becker, Health Officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Code Enforcement Officer Mitch Geist in attendance.

Geist reported making two spot check inspections. He also received and adjusted 43 complaints: one leaking sewer; two buildings condemned as unfit for human habitation; two dog waste; and 38 trash complaints. There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.

Raider Band

The Tamaqua Raider Band will hold summer rehearsals on July 16 and July 23. Hours will be from 9-11 a.m. both days. These rehearsals are for the instrumentalists.

Old and New Night will be held on July 30. New members will rehearse from 4-6 p.m. All instrumentalists and majorettes will rehearse from 6- 8 p.m.

Band Camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 5. Camp is mandatory for all band members.

All rehearsals will be held in the band room.

Stuff the bus

The Schuylkill United Way is again sponsoring its annual "Stuff the Bus" campaign, collecting school supplies for county students from low income families. In addition to collection locations at the Schuylkill Mall, Cressona Mall and Fairlane Village Mall, donations will also be collected at the Tamaqua Salvation Army and the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce office.

Backpacks, pens, pencils, erasers, notebooks, binders, folders, rulers, crayons, highlighters, mini staplers and markers are needed. the items will be collected all month (July).
