Theater auditions

The Tamaqua Area Community Theatre will be holding open auditions this weekend for the holiday production "Toy School." There are openings for actors between the ages of 6 and 21.

Auditions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. this Saturday and 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.

The show's premise centers around the need for Santa's toys to go to school and learn how to be toys before Santa can safely deliver them into the hands of little boys and girls.

St. John U.C.C.

The Sunday Worship activities at St. John Church of Christ will be held at 9:30 a.m. A time of food and fellowship follows the service. Sunday school begins at 11 a.m.

The weekly radio broadcast will air at 11:30 a.m. on WLSH radio station 1410 AM.

Other church activities are: 7:30 p.m. Monday, Spiritual Council; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, choir.

Walker Township

Safe Trick or Treat

Walker Township will host "Safe Trick or Treat" from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the New England Fire Company. The cost is $5 per family.

Drug take back

The Tamaqua Police Department will be participating in National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Oct. 26. Anyone with outdated or unused medication may take those drugs to the police station, located at the rear of 320 E. Broad St.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday School classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Voting change

Due to the bridge construction project on East Broad Street, voters in Tamaqua's Precinct 3 will see a temporary change in polling site. Instead of the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, the voting place has been changed to Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St.

Any voter who will find it difficult to travel to borough hall may apply for an absentee ballot.

Applications are available at the ABC High Rise, the office of state Rep. Jerry Knowles and at the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce office.

TEPTO

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, which provides support for students in the Tamaqua and Rush Elementary Schools, held its first meeting of the new school year with 50 adults in attendance. The group discussed plans for the 2013-2014 school year, including fund raisers, movie nights, school dances and room parents.

Fundraising packets have been distributed to all classes. Fire prevention programs will be held on Oct. 7 for Tamaqua Elementary School students and on Oct. 8 for Rush Elementary students.

Think pink

Local Girl Scout Rachael Paisley has a number of Breast Cancer Awareness events scheduled in conjunction with her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The events include Pink Hair Day; a poster contest; a Pink Light Walk; and the creation of a brochure that is specific to inflammatory breast cancer.

For Pink Hair Day, Rachael has enlisted the help of stylist Megan Phillips, who will add a pink hair extension to participants' hair. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 5, at Lifestyles Salon, 250 East Broad St., Tamaqua.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Sept. 26 with 65 members in attendance. Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "Anonymous."

A moment of silence was observed in honor of Mary Draper and Carol Yanalavage, recently deceased members.

Margaret "Peg" Zeird was added to the sick list and Pearl Davies was welcomed back to the group.

The Oct. 3 meeting will include the celebration of August and September birthdays.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

Older and bolder

The Tamaqua Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group has a number of activities planned for October. Upcoming activities will include: Oct. 2, a guest speaker from the Alzheimer's Association and interactive games; Oct. 9, program will feature a Summer in Taipei, Taiwan, bell practice and chair stretching; Oct. 15, bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. for the Diakon Senior Expo at the Fairlane Village Mall; Oct. 23, trip to Penn's Peak for a Neil Diamond tribute; Oct. 30, Halloween celebration with pot luck lunch.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Sept. 19 with 70 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "The Art of Living".

One new member, Kathleen McGonigle, was given a warm welcome. Flu shots were administered by a representative from Rite Aid. Carol Yanalavage was added to the sick list and Helen Clouser was removed from the sick list.
