Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Aug. 26 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 49 members in attendance. One guest, Mary Ann Laughlin, was welcomed.

The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Treasurer Shirley Becker provided her report and offered an inspirational reading.

Birthday greetings were offered to Ada Robertson.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, at the fire company. The next regular meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9.

Healthy adults

Diakon Community Services will offer a free "Healthy Steps for Older Adults" Program for Tamaqua area residents. The two-part program is being offered to residents age 50 and older and will be held Sept. 25 and Oct. 1 at the Majestic House Apartment Complex, 201 E. Broad St.

giveaway

The Tamaqua Community Volunteers monthly giveaway will be held Saturday at the M and M Self Storage center, next to Schickram's Car Wash on Rose Street.

Anyone wishing to donate items should have them at the facility between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday. Donations of clothing, toys, tools, electronics, holiday decorations, pots/pans/dishes, cookware, furniture, appliances and practically anything else are welcome.

Volunteers needed

The Tamaqua Community Arts Center is looking for volunteers to help distribute fliers throughout Tamaqua. The only requirements are to be able to walk or drive through to deliver printed fliers to local businesses.

Health fair

The Tamaqua-Panther Valley SU310 Girl Scouts will be holding a Health Fair for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade on Saturday.

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Aug. 12 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 48 members in attendance. There was also one guest, Anita Arcand.

The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld.

Reports were offered by Ruth Ann Feane, secretary, and Shirley Becker, treasurer.

Hub and Shirley Becker were offered anniversary wishes.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. The next meeting is 1 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Back to school

The Rush and West Penn elementary schools are planning Back To School Nights before the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.

Teachers will conduct informational sessions for individual classes, reviewing curriculum and procedures.

West Penn's night will be held on Wednesday. The school will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Parent sessions will be: kindergarten, 6 and 7 p.m.; first grade, 6:15 and 7:15 p.m.; second grade, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.; third grade, 6 and 7 p.m.; fourth grade, 6:15 and 7:15 p.m.; and fifth grade, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Middle school news

Christopher Czapla, principal of the Tamaqua Area Middle School has announced an orientation session for students new to the school will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Parents of sixth-graders, as well as seventh- and eighth-graders new to the district, are welcome to attend.

Information will be presented on student schedules, activities, facilities and discipline.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Aug. 7 with 65 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation "Christian Love."

Three guests, Anita Arcand, Ruth Nester and Nancy Thompson, were given a warm welcome. Pearl Davis was added to the sick list and Sylvia Houseman was welcomed back following an extended absence.

Upcoming events include the annual picnic, Thursday at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club; an Aug. 20 trip to Mohegan Sun Casino; and flu shots during the month of September.

Freshman orientation

Stephen Toth, principal at Tamaqua Area High School, has announced that freshman orientation for the 2014-2015 school year will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school district auditorium.

Parents and new students will be provided information on student schedules and activities, facilities and discipline.

Tours will not be given that evening, but may be scheduled by calling 570-668-1901, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
