Relay for Life

The Relay for Life for Tamaqua and surrounding communities will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. The main topic for discussion will be the upcoming Power of Purple event.

Organizers encourage all committee members, team captains and anyone interested in the fight against cancer to attend.

School taxes

The Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2014-2015 school year. This will cover the 2014 calendar year. This year's forms are orange.

Winter walk

Schuylkill On the Move (SOM), a project promoting positive steps towards good health through walking, will host a Winter Walk on Feb. 16 along the local Lehigh Valley and New England Rail Trail in South Tamaqua. The walk will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and will begin at Stonehedge Gardens, located on Dairy Road near the intersection of Route 309 and Route 443.

The four-mile ramble is considered to be an easy walk, but participants should wear appropriate footwear and dress for the winter weather.

Christmas trees

The borough of Tamaqua's Street Department will be collecting discarded Christmas trees throughout January.

Residents are to place their trees curbside on their regular trash collection days. Trees will be collected as time and weather permit.

Trees must be free of all tinsel and decorations. Residents are also asked to remove any plastic bags from the trees.

Trees may also be dropped off behind the Tamaqua Borough Garage, at 421 rear E. Broad St.

No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.

Soup social

Monthly soup socials are being held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. The next outreach social will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 1. The event is part of Trinity's monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program.

The public is welcome to attend and share in the free soup, friendship and God's love. Those attending are reminded to use the lower parking lot entrance into Founder's Hall.

Democrats to meet

The Eastern Schuylkill Democrat Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. The meeting will be held at the Hang Loose, 300 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its first meeting of the year Jan. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. There were 50 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered the invocation.

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Jan. 16 with 69 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "The Minute of God."

Reports were offered by secretary Ruth Ann Feane and treasurer Penny Schlorf. Michael Trubilla and Dolly Kamant were added to the sick list. Dues for 2014 are being accepted. Member Helen Trimble was congratulated on her 91st birthday.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

Democrats to meet

The Eastern Schuylkill Democrat Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. The meeting will be held at the Hang Loose, 300 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

The club will then meet the fourth Monday of every month, also at the Hang Loose.

New members are always welcome.

Calvary Evangelical

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a special message from a representative of CareNet Ministries of Schuylkill County. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

An hour of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Safety Program

Volunteers are needed for the proposed Green Dot Program (see Dec. 27, 2013 TIMES NEWS), which is designed to provide people from all walks of life with the skills needed to combat violence. Training provided by the Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center of Schuylkill and Lebanon Counties will focus on a bystander intervention program, offering awareness, education and skills-practice.

Street machines

The Tamaqua Street Machine Association will hold a special meeting to discuss the future of the car lovers' organization. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26 at La Dolce Casa on West Broad Street in Tamaqua.

All current members and anyone interested in cars are welcome to attend.
