Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. They will be celebrating Mother's Day with serving BBQ, ice cream and cake. They hope some of those attending will bring a donation of a cake. They will be playing bingo and there will be prizes for mothers.

Animals are coming

Animal Alley Ministries will be at Countryside Alliance Church, Route 115 and Countryside Drive, Brodheadsville, on Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. See and learn about animals such as sugar gliders, geckos, prairie dogs and more. Animal Alley uses these animals to teach character building lessons.

Blood drive

WZZO will be sponsoring a Blood Drive with The West End Kiwanis, Polk Volunteer Fire Company and Miller-Keystone Blood Center on Wednesday, May 11, at the Polk Fire Company, Route 209, Kresgeville, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Lioness generosity

The Western Pocono Lioness Club accepted two new members recently, Joan Hoffman and MaryAnn LaLumina and also held election of officers.

During the meeting reports were given on the upcoming fall luncheon and fashion show, the recent Holistic Fair and discussion took place about next year's event.

The Lioness Spring Rally, scheduled for 6 p.m. May 12 at JD Citros in Lehighton was also announced.

The club also donated $100 to West End Mission and $1,000 to the West End Ecumenical Network.

Family Movie and Dinner Night

Norm and Amy Burger invite all community youths and their families to a Family Movie and Dinner Night at St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown to begin at 5 p.m.

If you are in fifth grade and up, you are welcome to join in the fun.

YMCA Open House at Eldred Elementary

The Pocono Family YMCA will be holding a grand opening at its new West End Extension Site on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Eldred Elementary in Kunkletown.

The public is invited to join them.

Rotary speakers

The West End Rotary Club will host the following speakers in the next two weeks.

Joseph McDonald, candidate for judge, Court of Common Pleas, will speak on Thursday, April 28; Sheriff Todd Martin, Pam Formica and Maida Malone, will speak about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Thursday, May 5.

Four new members recently joined the club. Inducted by President Karin Breitlauch were: Janet Fisher, service/sales heating and air conditioning; Brandie Belanger, attorney; David O'Neill, marketing consultant; and Ed Gallagher, computer technician.

Easter Egg Hunt

St. Matthew's UCC of Kunkletown will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m. in the picnic grove, weather permitting.

If weather does not permit, then it will be held in the church's social hall.

If you would like to donate hard-boiled colored Easter eggs or filled plastic eggs for the egg hunt, please drop them off at the church by noon Saturday, April 23.

The Sunday School will hold program practice at 1 p.m., before the egg hunt.

SSP will celebrate Maundy Thursday on Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. with communion and stripping of the altar. Good Friday Services will be Service of Shadows at 7:30 p.m. and Easter Services will be at 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with Holy Communion.

Happy music

The Spring Pops was presented by the Pleasant Valley Choral Society this past weekend with the theme of Rockin at the Theater!, under the direction of Dorothy Mohr.

The society will soon be soliciting membership for the holiday concert set for 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.

Eldred Township Historical Society

The next meeting of the Eldred Township Historical Society will be Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the township municipal building. The guest speaker will be Don Hoffner who will talk about and demonstrate the art of flintknapping. Knapping is the shaping of flint, chert, obsidian or stone to make stone tools, strikers for flintlock firearms and arrowheads. This presentation is open to the public.
